weekend work ?

Postby blackthree4me » 01 Sat Jul, 2006 6:39 pm

although its not a buggy
a few have asked about my new prject
Gunter the Ghia
he is coming along well here is an update of his rebuild
the last few weeks have been spent on body repair
this is my first time to do body work I belive I bit off a pretty good chunk to learn on
heere we go
first is what I started with
Image
found the trunk got it bolted up big pain in the
so that i could find a good starting point for fit of the largest section
on to the outside of cutting up the old body to get the rear quarter section
the replacement was in poor condition as well only able to use the upper sections
Image
next came the lower portions new panels from motor works fit well
Image
once those were in place I could start on the inside to see if it all fits
there was allot of trial and eror fitting up to this point

Image
the inside was off by about an inch or so so out came the bottle jack to push the whole inner fender area back
Image
after looking at the whole thing I assume this car was hit from the back on that side so I found the pinch points worked the back out to a nice fit
then tacked it all together
Image

still have a long way to go but has been fun so far
on to the front lower spare tire area that will be the fun part LOL
Image
this car has so many lines and curves it aint funny
if it turns out well it will be a great day to say I did it myself
feel free to look over my WWW photo bucket site then into ghia and Gunter for the whole process so far

most of the time its
air compressor running
grinder cutting
hamering
or blah blah from the family
on good days I watch the nascar race or at least listen to the race
(most of the time my boys are sucking hind tit so I just listen)

to me there is no music needed im too involved in what im doing
the other day my kid went missing for about three hours
while i was suposed to be wathing him :)
he later told me where he was going but I dident get the message
to involved with the car
we went thru some ground rules while dads working on the car LOL
they get there time in
today I had my oldest tear down an IRS tranny
I couldent get the snap ring out so he said let me try I said go for it
he later told me man its harder than it looks
good lesson learned

Postby blackthree4me » 08 Sat Jul, 2006 7:03 pm

found a guy on the samba last week has 35 bugs and 6 ghias :o
their was tons of parts he has already pulled and stocked
got a windshield, washer bottle, latches, assorted emblems,
and few minor things but the grandady was theses puppys
Image

fairly decent shape with only minor dings and one rust hole I gotta fix
before chroming the set
if you guys havent looked at a set of new bumpers for a ghia latley
they are ouragous ghia bumpers are getting kinda rare
so these will do just fine
Image

I spoke with him about the group and he said he has plenty of goods if we need them like chassies, beams, trannys, that sorta stuff
most of the bodys were in bad shape
just a bit pricy on all the stuff 350 worth but fair I guess
yall know me I want everything CHEAP!!!
let me know if you need his number
he is in Dickinson TX
went by myself  wish you were there :P

Is your plan to make it complete stock? That would be awesome, but wow it's gonna be pricey! Wowweee!

I've seen ghia's use VW parts, and Porsche parts, they look great!

Remember to chat with your chrome guy before you send it out..usually they don't mind telling you what to do in saving $$$...the more prep and rust removal, the more you save!!!

I KNOW that's gonna look awesome when you get done!

Did he have any chassis with motor and transaxle? I have a friend that is looking for a complete chassis for a buggy he wants to build?
I'd appreciate getting the seller guy's phone number.
Keep the pictures coming of your progress.
I'm blown away by what you are doing.

Bill,
this was typical of the cars he had. this one being one of the better examples
one of the 63 ghias I looked at was totaly coverd with trees and bushes
this was a 67 with a couple spare motors for $500
Image
most had been in mud under a cover for quiet some time
quiet a few late models 70s up
he had one chassie with out the body that I know of for sure
almost every thing out there would need pans for sure
I will post his # in the for sale section under parts for sale Dickinson TX
when you call him tell him steveO (the ghia guy) sent ya
maybee I can get some freebies later on LOL
carlos
thanks for the cudos
yes it will be all stock down to the white walls
and yes it pricy but only certain things Like the bumpers LOL
hope it should be a nice daily driver for my wife
the fun thing about this car is not having to fabricate everything like the buggy
get it, clean it up, bolt it on.
so far so good
here is the car we expect to have when complete

Thanks, Steve.
Having seen your work, I know your's will look as good as, or most likely better than the red one in the picture, and that is one knock-out looking car.

you might want to look or consider the ones from Mexico, it's a 'factory' option! I've seen a bunch of 'em with a compressor, and apparently under full load, it's a 3-3.5 HP drain..not too bad for cooooooooool air!
