The swing axle transmission is the early style, but it doesn't keep the rear wheels flat when the suspension is really up or down. The IRS keeps the wheels straighter and the rear end can be adjusted more one way or the other without affecting the tire "pattern" on the road!
If at first you don't succeed, beat the pshaw out of the business partner, and then go at it alone! LOL!

The swing axle is actually the stronger, simpler suspension while the IRS offers better street handling, but is more complicated and more difficult to install. I believe that the IRS was a U.S. only option as the Beetles that were manufactured in Brazil up until last year all came with swing axles only.

One pro of IRS type is the removal factor..if you gotta remove the transmission, you disconnect the CV joints, and out comes the tranny... with the older Swing Axle, the whole assembly has to be removed...

stock height, they both work, and LOOK well.. lifted or lowered, the tires angle a bit too much for my liking..
you must have pride....in your ride....
