check your states DMV for safety inspections first.
once you know the rules meet them.
then the buggy will need to be titled registered.
and the hard one insured.

once you get all of that it should be stree leagal.

I have had no major issues with making my buggy or sand rail street leagal.
if it aint broke, break it then fix it

Street legal is a fairly simple thing to do. You must have lights, turn sigsnals, brake lights, tailights, and lighted rear licence plate light. Sincce I have always started with a sedan VW, and its for me, I just get p lates and title BEFORE I start.

Remember this is in Texasm they don't have you drive your car in to get a title or plates.

The inspection is the better part to do..........Nothing makes it harder than to have things that don't work on your buggy. If you have a windshield, you must have wipers.

Since I only start with 67 and earlier, I like the swing axles better.........there is no smog check, but be sure to have an air cleaner onl your carb. Make sure the brakes and emergency brakes works good and you should have no problem.

I have a place around the corner from me who never makes even get out since he knows everything on my buggies works before I get in there. The only complaint they ever had with me was they thought my headlights on the F! I had were to low to the ground...........there is a certain height they have to be but I can not remember it right off.

Don't take a piece of a buggy in and exspect to get it done, that don't work.
I have a local agent who has never given me any trouble about insurence but you do have to have that before you go in.

since i just got mine tagged, ill go over the steps i went through in texas,
1. go to local dmv, obtain form for assembled vehicle
2. have a police officer trained in auto theft come take a look at your buggy(have reciepts ready to show that u are the owner)
3.once the officer signs off on the form u obtained, take the form and have it notorized.
3.take paperwork to regional dmv(mine was in carrollton)along with
pruff of ownership(reciepts or manufacture bill of origin).they wll asign
you a vin number and tell u where to stamp it on the frame or body.
3.get insurance(got mine thru state farm)
4.get inspected(make sure all lights work,seat belts,brakes,parking brake,
headlights must be 24" from ground.
5.take paperwork back to local dmv to obtain tags
they will send paperwork to austin to obtain title.
6.Have fun!!
took me about 2 weeks to get to step 6.

my buggy has a tube frame,i didnt have a donor car and didnt use vw pan.

hope this helps
mike

ps.when they do the inspection, have them issue you a green sheet, showing the inspector verified the vin was on the vehicle.

In California, the chassis needs to be pre-'75 to qualify for smog exempt status (there is another way, but it's a huge hassle). The other requirements vary by year of the chassis. Check your State's DMV codes. You can also ask a local shop what's required.
