Tech HELP needed

Postby johber41 » 06 Sun Jan, 2019 3:38 am

Looking for the braniacs out there! Since changing out my intake (now with added heat tube and risers) I have been working away at reducing the hesitation in initial acceleration. I have also changed from the 009 distributor back to my OEM big cap Bosch with vacuum advance. This change also reduced the hesitation. Interesting enough, now I have whole new phenomena. Now when I run the engine, I get a too-rich burn on cylinders 2 and 4 while 1 and 3 remain normal. Cylinders 2 and 4 get so bad they foul and start missing. I do not know if this is do to my new intake or just something else I am going to have to deal with.

Any suggestions?

1). 1961 1200 CC 40 horse
2). empi PICT 30 carb, freshly rebuilt
3). Bosch big-cap distributor with points at .16
4). timing at .10 BTDC ( I tried other settings on timing but the plugs still foul)
5). plugs NGK BRGHS set at .28

I don't get it!!!!

What it souns like is that you are getting to much fuel and the non vaporized fuel is running down the through the intake on the shortest path to cylinders 2 and 4. I would say it has something to do with the carb seeing how fouling the plugs started when you swapped carbs. Stuck float, fuel air adjustment ...........

I hate to say it but I think you now have 2 problems. I would suggest that you work your way backwards and fix the last issue first (plug fowling) and then readdress your original issue (hesitation). I know it can be very frustrating but hang in there John,
My suggestions
1- Correct carb issue of fouling plugs
2-Go back to the basics to track down hesitation issue
A- Valve adjustments
B- timing
C. carb adjustments
3- Things to look for and check
A- Fuel pump pressure
B - Good Spark
C - Are you getting any icing with the new intake?
D- Coil

I hope I have given you some useful advice my friend. If you need to talk it out or bounce ideas around feel free to give me a call.

Thanks Heath......now that u mention it, I did not get the fouling issue until I fussed with the main jet. I will start by replacing that first. I watched a video where they cleaned the main jet with a small drill.....that could be the problem.

Sometimes while trying to do a thing better, you can make it worse.

Still in Detroit taking care of my mom....back on it as soon as I get back. Probably go see Henry for a jet replacement.

You know Bill, between the snow blowers, chain saws and generators......I can not remember. I think I may have the jet too wide....can not address it until I get back home from this winter vortex here in mo town. Last night it was 12 degrees below zero actual with 35 degrees below zero with wind chill.....not good buggy weather here at all! That along with the foot of snow!

Grew up in it....hated it...and then left it! Unfortunately, the family stayed! I like living where the population prospers and you can go look at Christmas lights in your shorts!

You guys have made me cold, and hungry. Stay safe John. We are seeing some very strange stories like people's frozen hair sculptures and wet jeans thrown into the air and they freeze stiff almost instantly in the air.

Its crazy Ken....Its a winter record for here and they say that at 40 below, we were colder than Antarctica. believe it or not, its Tuesday and now its 58 degrees and the snow is gone. I guess I will second guess my walk on Lake St Clair. Hope to be back in my garage working on my buggy this week!

Back home, replaced the main carb jet with a brand new 120 bought from the good people at Apple Tree Automotive (all VW) in Michigan.

Everything good.....back on the road.
