Guess who's back...

Postby Vee Dub Nut » 15 Wed Apr, 2009 12:38 pm

Hope yall didn't think you could get rid of me that easy

So I can't keep the secret any longer... barring any unforeseen complications, I will again be a buggy owner over the weekend. Now that the dust has settled on us buying our house and we've gotten some stuff taken care of, I've been eying projects again.

I recently finished building a small motorcycle project I took on at the beginning of the year. It turned out nice and ran good, but was just a 500 and lacked the power I'm used to when riding two up compared to my previous bike (Suzuki Bandit 1200). We'll after talking with the wife (who still really wanted a buggy) we decided that it would be fun to try and find another one to work on as a future project. So over the weekend I started to search craigslist, and wouldn't you know I found a project that had my name all over it. So up went the motorcycle for sale, and I made contact with the owner and struck up a deal on the buggy. I'm telling you the stars must have just been aligned right for us, because within an hour of listing the motorcycle for sale, I had a buyer at my house and they bought it on the spot. Talk about luck, now I don't even have to front ANY money to buy the buggy.

To make a long story short.. we are headed down to Rockport on Saturday to go pick it up. We should be coming up for the day on Sunday to the Classic and I hope to catch up with some of yall there. We won't be in the Bug though as I'm chasing down a couple of problems with it right now. We both really enjoyed the two buggy shows we went to last year, and think that yall are the greatest bunch of VW folks we've met yet. We are pumped and are looking forward to being able to cruise with yall in our own buggy soon.

Without further ado... here is the project.

Hey Chris.. does that chassis look familiar? I believe its the one you were selling a while back.

We'll its definitely a project, and I'm going to pull a Cory and put a lot of blood sweat and tears into fixing up old glass. One things for sure, I've got more time than money. (I've also got a good friend up in Dallas that does autobody for a living, and should be able to help me get some color sprayed on it down the road.)

This will again likely be a long term project.. but I'm hoping to have it running for next season if not sooner, I guess we'll just have to see how it pans out.

Anyways.. just thought I'd share. I'll be posting up a new thread in the members project section once I get it home and get some good pictures of everything.

I knew you couldn't stay away for long.

Good looking project. And that Glass doesn't look too bad - you aren't a gluton for punishment like I am.

See you in Fredricksburg - not coming with the buggy though :(

Yea I'm hoping that when I see it in person, it won't look too bad. Like I said, more time than money.

Getting close with yours?

Closer...

I've got paint ready for a still day.

I've got fronts seats, still need to get with Yoboy to get something put together for a rear (traveling all the time, I post this from Alabama).

Picking up some taillights from Texasbuggys at the Classic.

Found my headlamps with integrated turn signals, but haven't ordered them yet.

Need to put fluid in all the parts that need it and the pan is ready to go. Probably need to rebuild the link/king pins.

Then its just a matter of wiring it up and should be good to go.

Is that hood all one piece with the body? I don't see a seam?

Yea the hood is once piece with the body. I looked a little on DBA but with the limited pictures I have, I haven't been able to ID the body. Hopefully I can get a better idea when I get it home.

Sounds like your almost there with yours.. Just a few good days of work left and it will be finished.

Glad to see your back into the buggy madness! :D
That looks like a really good starting point, the body has nice lines and you will love the tube chassis it's way stronger then a 40 yr old rusty cut down pan.
Looking forward to watching your build

Nope.. I'm buying from John. Supposed to drive down and meet him on Saturday.

In our emails he referenced you and Chris, so that's how I knew it was the same chassis.

Thanks..

The body is a little rougher that I had hoped. Still deciding if I want to fix it, or try and find a different one. This one is definitely fixable, but it will take some work. I'm also not too keen on the once piece body as it doesn't have the usual gas tank holder area.

Figure I'll do up the chassis first and keep my eyes peeled for body options as I go along. If it comes down to it, I'll bust out some fiberglass and resin and whip this one back into shape.
