Quite a trip

Postby GregR » 11 Sat Jul, 2009 8:31 pm

Don't know if you guys have been following this on The Samba or not.
This guy and his wife drove their buggy to the Manx Club's Big Bear event in California...from Montreal!!!!
Anyway, they've done a great job documenting it. Enjoy.

I have been following it since before they started the 7000 mile trip. The highway gods have been good to them with no problems as of yet. They are currently in Big Bear,so they have made it halfway so far. You guys have to check this out.

yes it is. They have one in Lone Pine CA in teh Spring and Big Bear usually mid summer. There are other Manx Club events as well and hopefully they'll have some more, possibly this direction.

I was thinking it would be cool if a group of us met up and caravaned out there next year. We would be trailering , but I guess if anyone wanted to drive their buggy at least they would have a support team. So, anyone have a tentative interest?

That sounds like a great trip 8-). Of course it's a long way away time wise and a lot can happen between now and then. I'd be in for the trip. 8-) 8-)

Driving to Manx event

Postby Rick Leddon » 14 Tue Jul, 2009 12:45 pm

This is a subject that seems to come up anytime there are buggy guys drinking beer. I'm interested in making the trip in a buggy. I do have to agree with the last post, wanting to do it and really doing it are two different things. I will set a goal of doing it next summer and would welcome being part of the group.

Sounds like fun and I haven't even been drinking.
Does anyone know how California laws would apply to out of state vehicles? I believe in California they do not allow the tires to stick out past the fenders as well as a bunch of other crazy laws.

I go to Calif. about 6 times a year and have never heard of any restrictions on out of state cars. Also a number of club members in the Manx club bring out of state buggies to the events (including Vicent from Canada) without any issues. Just to be safe I will double check.

OK then, I guess I need to start another spare change container for a trip to Cali 8-). Where is Big Bear in relation to L.A. or San Fransisco? It would be a straight shot across I-10(BORING!!!) to L.A.

Big Bear is on the east side of the mountains, south of Lake Tahoe, north of Mojave on Hwy 395. From Dallas I40 from South Texas I10. That's one of the things to decide, interstate or a Route 66 type drive.

I guess we should organize garage weekends at rotating locations to finish everybody's projects so we can caravan there. This way no one has the excuse the car is not running just that the wife wont let us

Is there more than one Big Bear? When I Google map Big Bear it shows it just east of L.A.

I just did the same thing and noticed I-10 runs right past it. Close to Riverside.

Big Bear Lake California is about 40 miles (as the crow flies) East of the Ontario, CA airport.
It sits between I-10 on the south and I-40 on the north.
If coming from the north "approach" take I-40 west (which runs through Oklahoma City, Amarillo, etc) take a left at Barstow, CA.Go south about 50 miles and you're there.
The guys from South Texas would want to take I-10.

If you decide to go to Big Bear 2010 or one of the other Manx Club's CA events, you will have the time of your life..rigth David H?

By the way, currently, you have to be a member of the Manx Club to enter one of the events. Here's a link to that club site. http://www.manxclub.com/

I Think it would be Great....... However, I don't know if I could talk Edie into it. I think it would be fun. This time of year is awful hot. The LOne Pine event is in Oct. Is That right Greg?????? The weather would be cooler going in the fall.
I think it would be great to do the Route 66.

trip

Postby Jim B » 15 Wed Jul, 2009 10:52 pm

If there was any way that I could make the trip, I would do the Route 66 & I live about 15 miles from I-10 in West Texas. I did the 66 trip in 2001 on Hot Rod Power Tour & it was a blast. I returned on I-10 & it is just not the scenery that the northern route takes you through. I would definitely drive the extra 300+ miles to Amarillo to do 66 again. Hoping to have my buggy back on the road by spring time, so who knows where it might take me. :D I can't talk my wife into going that far in her Honda Odyssey, so I would be doing it solo, unless I could get a grandson to ride along.

Hey guys, Tom here from Baton Rouge. (yellow Ghia vert). I used to live out in southern cal. Went to Big Bear all the time both in summer for the camping and just general get away and in the winter for the snow activities. Big Bear is about a 3 hour drive from the Long Beach, Carson, Torrance area. July is a hot time in the Mojave desert I can tell you. They sell shade by the square inch out there.
No kidding it's hot and dry. Nothing like we're used to down here in the south. But once you're up there in the mountains it's fantastic. What a tremendous cruise a trip like that would make. It's probably around 1800 miles one way from here. I-40 would be the way to go as I-10 is long, hot and boring through Texas and Arizona. Besides I-40 would afford the opportunity to drive on the Old "Mother Road" "Route 66" in some locations. Just thinking about it makes me homesick. But plan on a 2 week trip. 3 hard days going and 3 hard days coming home with at least a week to take in all the sights while there. Wish I could go with you guys but gotta work to support my VW habbit. One of these days though. 8-)

I talked to Edie, and she might be game if we trailer the buggy up to Amarillo and than catch I-40.
