New Guy going to need help

Postby s10x1000 » 22 Sun Jan, 2012 6:20 pm

Im new to vw anything but Ive been looking at buggys online for a while. Im finished messing with my jeep and recently picked up a chassis that has been shortened but its in very rough shape.

It has a 40hp on it from what I can tell from the case number and some research online but I think I will be better off just replacing it with a bigger engine to begin with than try and make this thing faster.

I came across this online http://houston.craigslist.org/pts/2808111957.html
I sent this guy an email he says its been machine line bored and that those are 1641 pistons all it needs is a carb and distributor.

Does this sound like a good deal and is there anything else I should ask about or look if I go look at it?

Thanks

Welcome. Where are you at, so we know who is closest to help?

I didn't know a thing about VW's either when I started, and if I can do it anyone can.

Yes indeed, Welcome Aboard. We hope to meet you at some upcoming events. And, as Cory asked, where are you locaed?

When it comes to VW engines I have to depend on my friends. But, if I were considering another engine I'd only get one that someone I personally know had built or was selling. It's easy to make claims about an engine, but unfortuately your money is spent before you know what you have.

Just my two cents worth.

I live in spring and work in conroe. Its kind of hard to trust what they say on craigslist and not having a vast amount of knowledge on these has got me once already the 40hp was "most definetly a 1600" and I didnt know any better but lesson learned.

I was interested in that engine because It looked like it was mostly new parts, that were all together and it wasnt assembled. I'd like to assemble it myself to get a good understanding of where everything is and what does what.

Might consider getting the one you have running first and go bigger later when you have a better feel for what you want and after you know some of the players

A stock motor is pretty quick on a 1200 lb buggy

Being in Spring, you're very close to one very knowledgeable VW guy. Look him up here on the board, Bryan Porter. Maybe he can help too.
Like others have said. Go with an engine built by someone you know and trust.

There are also a lot of guys on DLKWEB.org up in your area. Great bunch of guys. It is give and take with them though. Dont expect to go on there and ask for the moon without offering to help in return. Anyway like I said great group of VW people and for the most part very knowledgable. Bryan P is the VW guy around here however very busy. Be patient and you'll get it done one way or another. There is also Testbud over on Aircoolers.org that builds long blocks for around $695 and there is nothing but thumbs up from everyone that has purchased one. He is in San Antonio.
