Another Newbie...

Postby Rick Lyon » 13 Fri Jul, 2007 3:39 pm

My name is Rick Lyon and I live in Tomball, TX...Have been an admirer of dune buggys for years but never thought about owning one. Now I think I'm just about to get there. Contacted Bill Knesek out of the blue yesterday and he piqued my interest even more about buggys. He told me about this web site and said it was full of nice, helpful folks and that I should think about joining the club. From what I've read so far, he's right...So here I am... Bill, Thanks for your time yesterday...Much Appreciated...

I've been in to 65-67 Corvettes for the last few decades and assisted with restoring one of mine back in 2004 to a national level and am now doing the unthinkable, I'm actually driving it on the street and enjoying it...Even got it in the rain last year...lol

I plan on asking a lot of questions as buggys are a new frontier for me but having gone down the restoration road a few times I'll try not to ask the real stupid ones...

I'm looking forward to being a sponge for knowledge concerning buggys and participating/lurking here on the Texas Manx Club Forum...

Later...

Rick

I'm trying to digest the buggy lingo, for sure...Many questions to come later...

From what I can tell, all of you guys do really nice work...I've been looking at ckolek's and blackthree4me's pictures and that is some nice work you guys are doing...The standards seem pretty high here...I really admire and like that level of work...

Will try to post a picture of the '65 Corvette we did a couple of years ago...First time to try to post a picture and if this doesn't work you can go to the following web site and take a peek at it there...

http://www.jmenterprizesinc.com

Click on "Cars", and mine is the 2nd Corvette (Yellow) down on the left side of the page...You can "Click" the picture and see some facts and also a "Before" shot of what we started with...Was in pretty bad shape when we started but it was worth saving...No more shots of Corvettes, though...

I think Bill K will see why I initially gave him a call, though... 8-)

Talk to you guys later...

Rick, welcome to the madness

I think you will throughly enjoy the hobby and building of a buggy. Unlike a muscle car, nothing is plug and play, but rather plug, grind, chop, re-plug, call a friend, and then play   . Seriuosly they are as much a mental challenge to the creative senses as they are a physical challenge of the actual build itself. Cool cars no doubt and very addictive.

Lurking is a great way to scavenge ideas and eliminate creative waste. I surfed for years before taking the plunge and can tell you I still bought some parts as many as three different times looking for the right combination. It is part of it.

You will also find that these TEXAS boys don't play and the level of build is waaay higher than the back woods buggies of yesteryear. The bar is high, but if you are used to building vettes, you are probably more anal than most of us   ....that was a compliment

Sit back, have fun, ask questions and expect to create a car more "you" than any other you have ever built.

proceed....I'll be watchin'........ 8-) 8-)

PS...you are hanging with bad company...that Bill K dude......

Thanks for the note...

Good Lord Willin', we might be neighbors in a few years...Bought my retirement property last fall about 65 miles due north of you right on the LA/MS state line...Grew up in the country and want to go back pretty bad...

I've been looking at your pictures too and you have a super nice buggy..!!! Again, I'm impressed with the level of work by the members of the TX Manx Club...Just Plain Nice Rides...I'm envious, to say the least...

I've been talking to the better half about buggys for the last few days and we're in the one eye, sharp raised eyebrow stage right now...Ever figure out how women can get one eyebrow raised up like that while keeping the other one down..??? 8-) I haven't...Hopefully we'll get over that soon...

Hope to meet you in the near future...

Later...

Yup Rick....I had a '66 327 roadster (same color as yours) that I restored. Still scratching my head, wondering why I sold it. ...Oh well.
The buggy sure is fun, and cheaper too!

We'd probably all be retired now, laying on a beach, drinking Mint Juleps if we had held on to some cars that we used to own in the past...

10-4 on buggys being fun, and from what I've learned so far, they are definitely a more cost effective bang for the buck...

Still working on getting that raised eyebrow down from the Mrs... 8-)

Talk to you later...

Hey Rick, do what I did with my first buggy. Buy it, put a big bow on it, and announce it as a wonderful gift you got for her.
