Seats?

Postby Vee Dub Nut » 15 Thu May, 2008 7:55 pm

So I saw this posted over on the Samba.. but I figured I would bring up the question here..

I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to do about seats. Originally I planned to make a real nostalgic style buggy (including all stock vw gauges, steering wheel, seats, etc) but more and more I'm getting away from that and doing little custom touches. I know a lot of folks are using Fiero seats in their buggys..

What are yall using?

I'm heading out to the pick and pull to see what I can find. I looked at poly bucket seats too, but there not the most comfortable, and the only seat tracks that I can find are going to run around $150.. for that price I'm thinking about buying some buckets and getting them recovered.

Fiero seats were mentioned because they are narrow.. and the big advantage is that they easily bolt to a flat floor.

I'm pretty tall so I need to have an adjustable seat so the wife can get close enough to the pedals (assuming I can teach her to drive a stick) and I'm also trying to keep the budget low on this project.. so any ideas?

I used '95 Pontiac Sunfire seats. If you can find seats narrow enough at a pick & pull, they are usually very cheap. In fact the place I got mine gave them to me. It's the recovering them that costs $$$$.

How much did it cost you to get them recovered?

I'm still thinking that would be way cheaper than some of the other options...

I looked at some beard seat.. good grief

Seats

I found a pair at the junk yard that went to an eclipse. They fit perfectly. I'll probably have them covered soon. They cost 75.00 for both and are in pretty good condition other than the color won't match the paint. The mounting brackets bolt right to the floor.

Ouch.. that is high

We'll that might shoot down that idea.. I don't want to invest $500 in seats

Hrmm.. there's got to be a cheaper route :?

Miata seats are another option. The sliders will bolt to a flat floor with little modification.

Check with one of our sponsors, YoBoy. He does fantastic work and he will also be at the Blast.
The cost to recover a seat sounds high, but compared to the prices of store-bought seats, it's pretty competitive, and generally they are more comfortable than store bought.

I tried the pick and pull route. But I was quoted about 500 for the price of recovering. (for the pair) For that kinda price, I decided to go with new ones. This is what I used.

You might also want to talk to Hawkeye next weekend. He has a contact on some good seat suppliers.

914 Seats are really cool looking in a Buggy. I think that's what I want to do when I get to that point with mine? Did you have them reupholstered, and if so what did it cost?

I used seats from a Factory Five Cobra. Believe it or not they come up pretty regularly...and for what I think is a good price.
