finally the last coat of putty is drying as I type. I had to use some spot putty to fill in all those rock chips on the hood and a couple on the fenders. I know I should have used fiberglass resin, but most of the resin work I did looked so bad and these spots were so small I just used the putty.

hopefully tomorrow will be a good day of sanding and next weekend it's off to turn the boss's shop into a paint booth and see how my first paint job turns out.

I'll post pics of before and after when I'm done.

but here's a few before's now.

buggy was delivered to the shop today and will start getting the underside painted black tomorrow. sometime after thanksgiving friday or saturday I'll start the primer/sealer and see how it starts to take shape.

late late late last night two coats of primer went down on the car.

some of the body work I did will have to get a little more attention to make the paint look good, but over all I'm happy with my first attempt.

sorry about the crappy resolution all I had was my camera phone I got in late from work and didn't have time to stop and get my digital.

fiasco day one,

ran out of primer sealer, couldn't make it to english color or dupont so I went to napa because they said they had primer. well it's not sprayable even diluted down it still wouldn't spray so I'm going to try something a little wierd. I'll be going to wal-mart to buy sandable primer to finish off a couple of spots,

basically I have about ten spots that are a little low and need some extra paint to build up to the rest of the surface and look nice and smooth,

once that is done (hopefully it works the way it should) I'll be putting at least one coat of color on

It's being painted reflex silver, a newer vw color. I picked it because of it's brighter silver color than ford, and chevy, also because it has a little silver flake in it too.

if all goes well I'll have some color pics for you tomorrow.

boba...
be sure you check out the Wal Mart stuff really well. Some fillers and primeerrs may not have all the qualities you want. Some harden pretty good. remember that the fiberglass body is actually ever changeing, stretching and contracting with heat, etc. Take your time, it'll be worth it.

it was a late night last night, got home about 3:30 a.m., and my plan actually worked, we got some building primer and were able to make the hood look like new again.

so hopefully today if theres not to much humidity it will have color and clear, the humidity last night is what made us quit.

well the color is still not on, but all the sanding is completely done and hopefully the boss will let me work a half day tomorrow and the color will go on, then late tuesday the clear will go on. let it set up over night and most of the next day, then any wet sanding and buffing will be happening.

hopefully by wed. night thursday morning the body will be back on the frame.

then all I have is everything else. it's not much just redoing the rear end, brakes, clutch, throttle cable, installing engine, the list goes on and on.

color went on tonight.

it's setting up right now and in a couple of hours the clear will be going on.

it's not perfect, but on a 1 to 10 scale I'd say the body work came out out about 7 and on the paint scale I'd say 8.5.

over all the car is 100 times better than when I got nine months ago.

I'll have some pics posted by tomorrow.

as you can see the from the previous the pics the body was a nightmare

but with no previous experience with body work or paint i'm pretty proud of the job I have done.

so here goes some pics for you viewing pleasure.

none of the clear has been put on yet that is going to happen when it warms up this weekend.

currently the clear coat is on and looks amazing except for a couple of drips that dripped out of the threads of the cup. I guess I didn't get the cup dried enough before starting the next step. but they should color sand right out. the body work could have been alot better and next winter the body will probably get redone.

later tonight the body will get shipped from the shop to my buddy's house where it can sit for a couple weeks so I can finish up the chasis.

I'll snap a couple pics later when we pic it up tonight.

no noe make fun of my garage I was told to get the x-mas stuff down and it is still everywhere but here are some pics of (duggy) post clearcoat.

I didn't have a whole lot of light just the two in my garage so some of the pics seem dark.

you can see the reflections of my two mustangs tail lights in the back ground of a couple pics.

I'm gonna experiment with some new ideas, tell me what you think.

I bought a speedo that reads 120 mph and a couple of others, but my original guages were much larger and different shapes, so I thought I would cut and shape a piece of stainless steel over the dash with new holes cut in it to fit the new guages.

also under the dash next to the pedals I really butchered the bottom end and did a really crappy repair job I figured it wouldn't show and of course it does. so I thought I would put a piece of stainless across the front of the body ( call it the fire wall if you will ) to match the dash and cover my pshaw.

what do you think

Looks great!!! Thanks for posting! Did you think about putting up a very tight low pile carpet. That is what I plan to do! I am looking forward to seeing more photos.

I am going to carpet the interior but I don't believe that it will cover that particular area so I thought since I was doing a stainless dash anyway why not do some stainless under the dash to kind of use some more stainless besides the dash. I thought maybe the dash would look out of place with only stainless there.

I have a huge problem with my dash. I don't plan to use the same gages as Bill had in it, and it has holes that simply are not worth fixing. I have seen a few people use wood as a replacement, but most of them seem to use a common wood like Oak, Cherry, or Pine. If you look around you can find a exotic wood. Its a little pricey, but you really don't have much area to cover. My Roll Bar and Chassis will be Powder Coated a funky shade of Orange. And if I remember correctly Paduke is just about the same color naturally. A anodized aluminum would look great in your buggy seeing that it is silver! I think you are doing great. In the words of someone way smarter then me...Way to go...That's the way to think outside the box!

heres a few Ideas
1) hide the repairs
carpet hides alot the kit comes with enough to do the firwall
stanless is good and would look nice maybee even diamond plate use thin stuff easer to work with and a bead roll in it would be sweet
for the outside I used roll on bed liner to hide the repair spots it does a great job
2) dash
the options are endless if you have a fiberglass dash
glass in the old holes sand paint
cover with any material. SS,diamondplate, pwder coated mettal, wood, floor laminate, carbon fiber or carbonfiber cover over mettal, plexi glass, glass, mirrior ,material, leather, vinal, or whatever else you can find

mine is a plasic dash that I had repaired cracked again so i covered it
with vinal and made a ss face plate to hold the gagues i have the templet if you need it

the choices are endless just think out side the lines

Oh I totally missed your 71 back there too busy checking out your buggy and 66 mustang. They are all very nice, I'm just partial to the 65 through 68 mustangs.
Keep up the good work on your buggy its come a long way and really looking good.
