5.0 in a Buggy...

Postby Faron » 01 Mon Sep, 2008 10:42 pm

I POSTED THIS ON THE SAMBA AS WELL BUT I KNOW THIS CLUB BETTER!
I went to a friends party yesterday, and one of his family members owns a Sandrail. This Sandrail has a engine from a 5.0 Ford Mustang. I talked to the guy for a while and he said that it was an easy thing to do. In a nutshell... He bought a fully running Mustang engine with the computer and everything. He was using a Bus Transaxle and used a Engine Swap kit from Kennedy Engineered Products. I cant tell you how cool it was seeing a dune buggy and hearing a V8 engine in it.
Has anyone ever done a Engine Swap in Buggy like this? If so how hard was it to get it running?

I don't think the front tires would ever be on the ground, with v8 hanging off the back of short wheel base buggy. Big difference in a long wheel base rail and a short buggy. Maybe it would work in a mid engine setup but then you'd have no room for the driver or passenger.

I for one like air-cooled VW power, easy to work on good gas mileage and you can go as mild or as wild as your wallet will allow. But hey I built my buggies the way I wanted them and really didn't care if anyone else liked em, so to each there own if a v8 does it for ya, go for it!

A fully Dressed 5.0L is between 450Lbs and 500Lbs.
A fully Dressed 1835cc VW engine is between 390Lbs and 425Lbs
I dont know... Do you think this is correct?

I plan to put the gas tank under the hood, and I guess I could add weight if I needed to. But you all know me, I want to do as many wheel stands as I can! I am in this car for fun, not to worry about it breaking it. If I break it, I will fix it by making it stronger!

WOW 390 to 425! I must be a strong son of gun :D I don't know never weighed the engine.
Ask Texasbuggys how the mustang svo 4cyl turbo worked out for him in a short buggy, if Im not mistaken that engine has found a new home in his long wheel base 5 window truck.

Not trying to talk ya out of it, if thats what you want to do, DO IT!

Hey Faron, my wife wants to go skying in New Mexico. Can ya give me any tips? I don't even know where to start.

HaHaHa Ryan... I am a flake... you had a VW Engine and switched to a Corvair engine. I on the other hand have not owned a engine for this Buggy.... It was awesome to see that rail, and then hear a 5.0. I am 95% sure that I will put a 5.0 in the back of my Buggy. Cool Cool Cool I love the sound of a V8!

OK I did sell my first Buggy and said that I was done. But I sold it so that I could move to Albuquerque.
