Tire size on dune buggies (like other vehicles) has to do mostly with taste and preference. The size you choose helps create what I like to refer to as the "posture" , or stance of the car.
My preference is what my friend, Tom Colello, refers to as the "Indy Look". That is, lower in the front with a wide, ground-hugging posture. That's just me. Other's preferences are different, and they select tire/wheel configurations to create the look they want.
My set up is:
Front --- P205/60/14 on 7" rims
Rear --- P295/50/15 on 10' rims
Hope this helps.

Off Road or Street?

Postby sdbills » 08 Mon Oct, 2007 5:50 pm

Well said Bill K. It also depends on what you do with your ride. Meaning Off Road (Sand), or Street (Asphalt). Most sand cars do better with a narrower front tire and wider (paddle) or all terrain tread tires on the back. I have a Sand Rail Buggy but it was built for the Street. It is street legal and I run B.F. Goodrich 31x10.5x15 All Terrain on the back and B.F.G. 215R75x15 Trail AT's on the front.
I had money before I built my DuneBuggy!

Tires

We just like the looks it gives. We like that it makes the car look like it's about to take off from the line.

Our Green buggy had big tires in the back. I can't remember what size they were though.

Even our current buggy build has a bigger tire in the back and small in the front. If interested I'm going to sell those tires and Rims as we wanted to get a different set of tires and Rims we saw in a magazine.

Our Bus has that stance as well. We have people taking off at lights thinking our bus will take off. I guess they don't know a VW bus is not that fast...
