VIN Questions???

OK I know that I am going to sound stupid, but how do I decode the VIN on a Bug? Also is it possible the VIN is only seven digits long I am used to 17 digits? Lastly is the VIN found on the tunnel near the back close to the little opening? Thank you in advance.

To see what year your Bug chassis is. The number is on the back of the tunnel just past the opening for the shift coupling to the transaxle. The 17 digits is government bureaucracy at work. Tom

Hummm..... I understand how to read a Modern VIN, its strange not seeing 17 digits. All but the last 7 digits are options on the unit. The number I got off the Chassis (First 3 637) says that it was a 1954 built in Feb. if I am reading it correct.
