wipers for inspection

Postby buggyryan » 05 Fri Sep, 2008 10:22 pm

hey guys are windshield wipers necessary to get your buggy inspected? i looked at the pics from the buggy blast and seemed like alot of the buggys dont have wipers . is it possible to register our buggys as an antique and get the exemption like my 1933 chevy? my baby will be a pretty day garage queen anyways no wet weather ever unless i get caught in it .

I talked to Jessie Carlos about this when we still worked at that PooPoo Hole The BMW/MINI Center of San Antonio. Jessie said that I would have to have working Windshield wipers in order to pass inspection. But Jessie only knew about new cars and did not understand why we do what we do. So I would take that with a grain of salt!
We need more photos of your build Ryan. Email me the photos and I will post them up again.
By the way do you miss the Parts Department?

Ohh and just so everyone knows The BMW/MINI Center of San Antonio is a crummy place to work.

In Texas.. the law states if you have a windshield, you have to have windshield wipers

Now that doesn't mean that you couldn't pass an inspection in the right place ;-)

If you need a wiper assembly, I have one I will sell for $30.00, and then you don't have to worry about them. You will be able to pass any inspection, and be complient with the law. If you get stopped without them and the inspection sticker is current, they can deside to give you a ticket.
If at first you don't succeed, beat the pshaw out of the business partner, and then go at it alone! LOL!

You could also remove the windshield for inspection. Not sure where they would put the sticker though. :?:

Yea you could.. my first buggy didn't have a windshield and the only way I could get it inspected was finding the section in the code that said I didn't need it or wipers. I read through pages of stuff and found one segment that said if the vehicle didn't have a windshield, that wipers were not necessary.

I took that code with the appropriate section highlited and they passed me for inspection

ok so i guess my question still is how did alot of the guys in the boerne event get inspections without the wipers and it looked like some didnt have stickers at all just registration tags. is it possible to register as an antique and avoid the inspection? david is that a drive asembly and arms for 30.00? do you need mesurements from hole to hole or are they all standard sizes?it also looked like some guys had manual wipers mounted to top of windshield frame?

Like I said before.. even though you have to have them legally... it doesnt mean that you can't pass an inspection depending on where you go.

I plan to do the clamp on manual wiper on my build

well i have the inspection thing covered i just dont want to get anyone in trouble. thats why i was so curious as to how all the buggys without them got stickers and then some didnt have stickers at all and maybe they were registered as antiques.

I may be wrong..but I don't think your supposed to register buggies as an antique since its not an original production car. The only way you could register it as an antique is to have an original VW vin number and not mention that it isn't a Beetle anymore. The whole titling and vin questions really open a can of worms on what is technically right and wrong as it is. Everyone has their own beliefs on that..

But for what your asking.. it is true that IF a vehicle is registered as an antique that it doesn't require the yearly inspection. That is how I have my sedan registered.. whether you can get away with that on a buggy.. I dunno

So you have to make the call really... If you have a person that will inspect it with out wipers you can be on your way, but remember that your running the risk that any cop who wanted be by the book could cite you for it.

WARNING...THIS IS JUST MY OPINION... but personally I wouldn't loose any sleep over it, but be prepared to take your licks in the unlikely event that you do get nailed for it..

Speaking of this I was at the DMV a couple weeks ago getting the rail title transferred, It has an assembled vehicle title.
It took a while to find someone there that has a brain, so when I did I ask a few questions and found out it doesn't make any difference if your using a bug pan or not "Any time you alter a vehicle (body swap) the vehicle must be retitled" as an assembled vehicle.

Looks like about 98% of us are running illegally titled buggies

That's definitely a controversial topic.. and depending on who you talk to you get varying answers.

Some say that it needs an assembled title.. some say that the Beetle title is fine as long as the insurance company knows what they are insuring. Even within the registration offices, depending on who you talk to you can get different answers.

Mr Bryan Porter was informing me to this fact during the round up. It is illegal to physically move a vehicle identification number. If you are using a VIN from an altered car, you are breaking a law.

Bryan mentioned an officer, not happy with home built buggies running around the town, pulling car over and inspecting for this. I am not sure what he was doing to them and it was not recent.

Mine has the original Bettle VIN plate located on the from beam, like a lot of others.

As for the inspection, the windshield is NOT an inspected item, but if you have one, you must have working wipers. Mine is removable. I have a small plate on the driver side for holding the reg and ins stickers. My plexi-glass sheet is removed for inspection.

Go to the DMV they will give ya a packet of paper work that details all the requirements(thats if you can find someone with half a brain). If you have a titled pan take your chances cause assembled vehicle (ASVE) is a pain in the rear, been there done that.
Let me know if ya need more info :)
