Insurance

Postby Patrick » 09 Sun Nov, 2008 1:15 am

This is what bugs some of the buggy people. It comes down to Insurance Companies. We try to get full coverage on our buggies. ( I know some of you do have full coverage), but our Insurance Company does not believe in Full Coverage for a Dune Buggy. Once you say buggy that's it.

I asked if they insured a Motorcycle and they say yes they do. I said well motorcycle riders can get injured more though.

This rests my case. Popping wheelies, Racing at 180mph and almost eating it in the back of a car, etc.

TBH, I think insurance companies are reluctant to insure buggies at full coverage due to 2 reasons: most buggies are self built (and a LOT are poorly put together), and 2, cost of components. When a buggy wrecks, it self destructs (even, to a lesser degree, tubular chassis buggies) and you are out $XXXX body, $XXXX chassis, $XXXX (or $XXXXX :P) engine, $XXXX trans-axle, etc.
This easily can outstrip the cost of a new bike, and I won't even mention insurance fraud (but I just did?).

Yes it's frustrating, I know. Call around, keep receipts, and don't take no for an answer...ask to bring your buggy by for an inspection before they say no, etc... Having built a few "experimental" vehicles, I know the above process works.

My $0.02.

Try Grundy Insurance. They insure buggies for a stated amount coverage. You send them three pictures with three angles. If they think it's worth it they'll insure it. :)
