I think if you go on THE SAMBA they have a birthdate chart that goes by VIN# and Motor#

I couldn't figure it out either. I would pose the question on the Samba in one of the Beetle forums.

another link

http://www.aircooled.net/gnrlsite/resou ... umbers.htm
Basic identification is as follows
Anything with a swing axil and link pin front end is pre 1967
1967 - 1968 chassies have swing axil trans and ball joit fron ends.
post 1968 has an IRS with a ball joint front end
and 1970 introduced the Mc Strutt to Supper beetle

once you know which of the three you have there arnt much changes by year anymore.
say most link pins run the same parts.
ball joints same parts.
swing axil ECT.

hope this helps a bit

Unfortunately, it can get a bit more complicated. My chassis code is a '63 but I have a ball joint front end. Someone must have replaced the frame head.

I believe the only difference is the size/shape of the floorpans, which could have been replaced anyway.

Independent rear suspension :D
That motor looks pretty nice. What kind of tail lights are those? They look like early 60's chevy. Do you have a wider view of the back end? Good looking car by the way.

1973 Ghia per the # Thats what had us stumped, but its posible.
The Ball joint front end and IRS transaxil in the rear confirm the 1973 BOD

Most likely when the chassie was shortened it had beetle replacement pans installed to fit he buggy, as ghia pans will not fit.
If you can, check the weld of the frame behind the E brake for cracks.

realy nice car :D
I would put those freeloading carwashers in the Pic to work
I see some hardware in your future.

Realy with a bit of simpel green that car will realy come alive it has all the right hardware to be allot of fun for you and your family.

A roll bar and good seat belts are first on the list.

In photos #4 and #8 the transaxil drive shaft boot is torn

That will require repair sooner than later.
:( later will cost more than it is already going to cost
a good repair manual will be in order as well :D

Check your brakes too. Seeing sealer on the threads of your brake line to wheel cylinder connection is never a good thing. No reason for sealer there.

Just an observation, didn't late model Ghia's have front disc brakes?

You never know what's been done to these buggies/pans over the years like vin swaps, Nooo  no one would ever do that kinda stuff.

Wow! LUV this forum... Front end is Ball Joint, Rear end is IRS, Frame must of been shortend (look for a weld or cracks) to confirm, right?. Chassis is from a VW Ghia, according to the chart is a 73, and I got some workers on the pics that need to get working & washing the Buggy..! LOL ... I'm doing my home work now, I wanna do front & rear Disc Brake kit with E-brake. Can I do it? and is Ebay the best place to get the kits???

Yes you can and ebay probably is not the best place for disc kits.

Check with Texasbuggys or Hawkeye buggies or Action imports or socal imports or lots of others, grab a hot VWs magazine.

yah a ghia would have had disc on the front I should have known that

Short buggys have the frames shotened 14 1/2 " they usualy cut them behind the E brake mount

I would inspect that area closely if you did not build the car .
I have seen many that were on the verge of breaking.
corectly built would have those slots welded shut wont be needing the heater vents with a buggy.
see photo

Steve O is very right about inspecting the cut area. My chassis was on the verge of breaking in two with a terrible butt weld.

I ended up with a piece of lap plate over the joint area, and feel very comofortable with that.

Holy pshaw... ;-) Lucky U noticed the weld.

Well I ordered my new Disc Brake kit from EMPI, no more drums. All four new disc brake kit, plus dropped spindels 2.5" front, and also E-brake on the rear..! Wonder who's gonna stop me now! 8-) .......

I took disc brakes to machine shop to get them new bolt patter of 5x112mm drill. I have some AMG rims in my garage that I plan to put on. Suprisingly NO one does adapters for 5X112MM. Cant wait to see how thats gonna look! I will post pics on how those will look...
