suggestion on best insurance solution for a sand rail

Postby wildwestrider » 21 Fri Jan, 2011 7:42 am

I Called Geico the other day to add my new to me sand rail to my policy,....I was thinking I wanted full coverage since I have heard that rails and buggies do get stolen from time to time and I suppose that there might be a somewhat higher risk of an accident since I will be off roading from time to time.

The call to Geico didnt go very well, the rep's first question was "How much did I pay for it".....which seemed like a query to determine how much they would pay me for it in the event it was stolen.....so....I didnt feel comfortable persuing that line of discussion....and asked her if it was her reason for askiing was to determine claim value in the event of a total loss...............she kind of hemmed and hawed a bit.............the conversation deteriorated from there when she asked me if I had in any way upgraded it or done any customization,....my best response was that all buggies are pretty much custom built for the individual owner.......she was unsuof how to proceed at that point and asked me if perhaps I should speak to someone in their classic vehicle devision.................At that point, I told her I wanted to do a bit of research myself and get back.

Any suggestions on the best way to get coverage on a sand rail.

Yes, I could just get liability,....and I may end up doing that.....but do want to at least get a quote for full coverage.

Is it registered as a VW or is it registered the completely legal way as an assembled vehicle? Mine is just liability because its registered as a 63 VW. That might tell you how to insure it. Call around. I know that some of those classic only guys wont insure buggies.

For my rail, I have liability coverage with Geico. My rail is registered as a "1970 VW Rail Dune Buggy".

I have never spoke to an agent. I priced and obtained my policy from their web site. You might try different options on their site and see what the different result are?
