Need a little advice please

Postby Faron » 24 Tue Jan, 2012 10:03 pm

I need to do the brakes on my Buggy, and wanted to get the input from the group to see if I missed anything before I place this order. I don't mind buying what I need, however I do not to want to buy extra. Seeing that I live so far away. I cant start up the grill, and fill up a cooler with beer to get help. I am going to have to ask funky questions here, even if I do look stupid. I really appreciate this clubs help, and look forward to being able to Thank You all in person soon.

I think your new disc brake kit should have hoses with it mine did may save a couple $$$ also if you have a place close by that does cable stuff get them to crimp new ends on E brake cables lot better then shortening kits theydo not have to be metric look up wire rope in phone book to find someone good luck

What about your master cylinder? Is it good? Otherwise change it along with everything else. And I'd try to find the Volvo resevoir, its a nice clean look. Think brake light switches too. I had to buy two because my master had two holes to plug.

Why are you replacing the stars and screws? They should still be ok from the old set

does your disk brake kit come with bearings?

I was told to put the front wheel cylinders on the rear and the rear ones on the front, so I did. But I have drums all around. Stops great! Even though you will have disc brakes on the front, you might consider the front wheel cylinders on the rear.
You will probably need a master cylinder made for disc brake applications.

Another thought, stainless braided hoses will give you a more solid pedal. Also use DOT4 brake fluid.
When tightening your rotors, use a dial indicator and keep the end play between .002" and .005".

A Beetle has larger brake cylinders on the front. A buggy doesn't need more braking to the front, it needs more to the rear hence the practice of swapping cylinders.
So, you might reconsider the front disc brakes- going for rear discs instead and keeping drum brakes on the front....or do like several of us have and go disc all around :D

Thank you for all the sound advice! I guess I need to think about a new master cylinder, and taking the plunge and go with 4 wheel disk brakes. Seeing as I am going to get a new master cylinder. How do you guys feel about using a new peddle assembly as apposed to the stock unit. The one I have now seems to be okay, other then being painted that STUPID Purple! Uggghhh Thanks again guys!

thers nothing wrong with stock peddles just make sure the hook part for the clutch cable is not worn out sometimes you need to build it up with weld!! I like 4 wheel disc less maintence and look better

I have been thinking about 4 wheel disk, because of the wheels I plan to buy. It will look better that way, as they are pretty open wheels. I am going to do some looking and a bunch of buying in the next week. I relly need to see some progress in order to have it finished by April 15.

Okay so back to the drawing board I go, here is a new list. I will probably order everything Monday, and then start a new list for the next step. I plan to take this list to my local VW parts house to see what he will charge me. I know that I might save a little money by buying off the Internet, but I like this guy and its nice to spend my money local. Heck this is the very same guy who sold me parts for my Baja Bug that I had in High School close to 26 years ago. He is a little rough around the edges, but if I have a question he is always happy to answer it honestly, and I really respect that. He will let me buy something stupid, but will always tell me when I do not need it.

Do some snooping on the net about disk brake kits. A lot of times they are poor fitting and dont come with everything you need, ie brackets, bearings, spacers. This is just what I have heard as I have four wheel drums and they stop the buggy just fine.

Again thanks for the info guys, it has been a ton of help. I have never seen a disc brake conversion up close and personal. Does the e-brake cable work the same?

I noticed you have dropped spindles on your list. I also have dropped spindles and I also have an adjustable front beam. Speaking from experience, you do not need both. I first adjusted everything all the way down. It was absolutely too low. I was picking up road kill and cow patties! Spindles alone will be enough. :)

Thanks, I plan to put 16" wheels on the front, and 18" inch on the back. By doing this I doubt Lowering it will even be much of a option. LOL I had been thinking that I do not need the Drop Spindles as I already have the Adjustable front beam.
