Insurance

With whom do you have your buggy insured with?
It seems Progressive is now sending their "classic" car policies to Hagerty.
Hagerty will only write a comprehensive (full) coverage policy.
My concern is that insurance data is now attached to our state registrations.
If our insurance policy states "Dune Buggy" it could be a red flag for renewing registrations.

Who do you have buggy insured with?
Does your policy state "Dune Buggy"?
Do you carry full coverage and did you supply pictures?

My rail is current with a Progressive liability policy, but it does state Dune Buggy. If I make any change to it, they will force me to Hagerty full coverage and require pictures.

I would like to find a liability policy company that I can cover as the registration (title) states. 1970 VW Bettle.

State Farm (with whom I have 2 other cars, house, etc.)
Antique policy $17/month. There were restrictions though.
1973 VW Bug

pretty long string on the samba about this, http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=626144

Hagarty insures genuine/numbered or authenticated Manx buggies.

Progressive
1973 Super Beetle
Liability
No pictures

I figured if anything ever happened to it, I'd fix it myself. Liability was important at the time; I think.

That was a long string on The Samba, but informative. Sounds like there could be several factors involved that could effect your coverage, including whether or not the policy writer is in a good mood or not! Geez..

My "fix" turned out much simpler than I was making it... Thanks again to Delia... Do we ever thank our wives enough??? Yea, I'm sucking up.

So I got a new authentic Manx buggy!!! YAY, but there is a real honest tragedy attached to it, that will probably always suppress my full excitement about getting a glass true Manx. Anyways, regarding insurance, I had two needs. 1)Get my new Manx covered and 2)Remove the words "DUNE BUGGY" from my rail policy.

Delia was able to add the new Manx to the current rail Progressive policy and she was able to edit the policy to remove the words DUNE BUGGY. She was able to do this completely through the web site without speaking to any humans. The Manx has full coverage for a value we determined and the site asked for no pictures. A real person my review this at some point and require pictures, but for now I'm set. No pictures and nothing mentioning DUNE BUGGY on the policy!

When I tried to get a new quote for the Manx, the Progressive site would take me to the Hagerty site.

I can't speak for Greg. But the tragedy I speak of is that my very good friend no longer has the buggy that he spent countless hours building into a part of him. It seriously saddens me that my friend has passed his torch. With that said, I am honored to have the opportunity to take a turn at the next chapter of this finely built green machine... aka... Oscar the Grouch.

Thank you Greg for allowing me the honor. I could not wish for a better built glass buggy to have in my garage.

I wouldn't say I'm moving UP, just diversifying. I've always said "bodies are over rated", but in all fairness I had little first hard experience.

Thanks for posting the video Greg. Here are a couple pics I really like.

With insurance taken care of, we hopped in and took it into town for the first real road test and I will say this about a glass buggy... it is CRAZY noisy!!!! Don't miss understand the engine and wind sounds are greatly reduced, so much that there is this constant sound coming from the passenger seat!!!! Is this something I will get adjusted to or will I need to rework the buggy's exhaust system to remove it?

Of course its 12 VOLT... no question Greg knew what he was doing when he put this thing together!!!

Don't touch that exhaust system! Poor some wine on that noise? I use it for all sorts of stuff.. Sore back, stiff knees, hair cream, night-cap, breakfast; really whatever I need to be different than it already is. You get the idea..

Congrats Ken!

Per the insurance questions - went through the options a year and a half ago and this is what I found:

1. Spoke to Hagerty and they said "no dune buggies"; they didn't ask if it was a Manx but it wouldn't have mattered for my situation.

2. Got insurance from Progressive (Stratum Insurance was agent who specializes in "toys") for $494 for 6 months comprehensive with $500 deductible. Was freaking happy to be on the road. Could probably do better with multi car discounts etc.

3. The next month I found collector car insurance with Grundy Worldwide. Requires the usual stuff that it must be garaged and not a daily driver - I declared value of the car of $10K and it is $158 per year, so very inexpensive. Cancelled Progressive and this is what I have ongoing. Given mods I need to bump it up now. To be underwritten they requested a photo, description, etc. so all above board (no apparent dune buggy issue).

Hope that helps.

Jeff, so you have collision, comprehensive, and liability for $158 / year? If so, that's a smoking hot deal.

Did you have to insure other cars with them, or did they take the Buggy alone?

Yep. Collector vehicle insurance... similar to Hagerty. Looked again and declaration was a little less $9.5K.

Self declared so you can set it to whatever you like.

Grundy Worldwide, Horsham, PA (800) 338-4005

Let me know what you find out if you talk to them.

Regards.
