Hey guys...

Postby tjheller » 27 Sat Jan, 2007 6:52 am

Just want to introduce myself. I'm new to VW's with the exception of a rail I had a year or so ago. It was built for drag racing with a 2110 and that's all it was good for. Tires would catch in the sand and break tie rod ends everytime I went out....no fun at all. Anyways, I just bought a buggy that needs to be put together. Body and pan are in great shape, but it is an early 60's with swing. The wheels sit at a severe angle with so little weight on it, do they make sway bars or something similar to hold 'em in check. Also, at the buggy blast are there typically quite a few buggies for sale. Thanks.

Welcome to the Texas Manx club.

You will need to re-index the torsion bars/swing plates.

If my buggy doesn't sell before the blast it will be there & for sale.

Welcome to the Club. Generally, there are not a lot of buggies for sale at the Blast, but I would still urge you to make the event. You'll get to meet a lot of nice folks, and come away with loads of information and ideas.

The Spring Plate Tool is something that you can't do without. The Meyers Manx board tells you how to do it with a floor jack and chain. This tool makes it much less dangerous to relieve the tension from the torsion bar. With this tool, it is also much simpler and quicker. I would NEVER think of doing it without the tool. One end hooks over the spring plate, and the other goes over a bolt head in the body mounting panel hole on the shock tower (you may have to put a bolt there if you are running something without a bug body like a F/G buggy or rail). Then follow the basic instructions as set out by the Meyers thread.

welcome I am also new. I got my buggy last summer and have been working on it ever since. I just order a set of adjustable spring plates in hopes of being able to adjust my suspension for street and off road use. I also ordered a set of pedals so I will have hydraulic clutch instead of a cable. I am trying for reliablity so I can drive to texas for events down thier and other places so I can off road. We have no blm land in Iowa and public land for off road is restricked to motorcycles. I suppose for safety reasons. good luck with your project. Mufasa

Hopefully I'll have this thing done by May and I believe it will go into my toy hauler which means I'll be there. My wife is actually excited about having a buggy,...she'll probably drive it more than I do so I should be able to work on it at nights without too many gripes. Thanks for the info on the suspension, there is a place in a neighboring town (Odessa) that specializes in VW's, surely they can do it.

If you ever let her drive it, you won't ever see it again. That's what happened to me. Before you know it you will be a two buggy family. His and hers. Good luck and welcome aboard.
