IRS Tranny

Postby David Head » 12 Wed Apr, 2006 6:55 pm

Looking for a used IRS Tranny. Not a super beetle. The SB I pulled out to put in the Rail has a different mount in it so I can't use that one.

Admin note: David was looking for a replacement tranny. The follwoing comments are good to know about positioning the "hockey stick" and the different nose conemounts....

David, Just change the nose cone. It is an easy swap that takes ten minutes. I bet David has them in stock.

The IRS you have is for a 1973 up car, it has the 3 bolt nose cone, the one you need is the nose cone off of an IRS transmission, with the two bolt mount. All it takes is a gasket and the positioning of the "hockey stick" when you put it back on. If you don't tear the gasket, blue silicone will seal the nose cone to the transmission.
If you need a new or used nose cone, let me know and I will see if I can help out!

David O, How do you make sure the *hockey stick* is positioned correctly when putting on the new nose cone?

The easiest way is to take the hockey stick and position it in the "U" shaped section of the shift rods. (There are three) Let the hockey stick stay in that place as you slide the nose cone down the stick to the mating surface.
Oh, put the hocky stick in the nose cone first, and then let the nose cone slide down enough to do this.

Thanks, I will give it a try. I may be able to save a little money. I just pulled this tranny out of a Super beetle that has been seating for 19 years. If it works, great. If it doesn't. Well, I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

when I got the one out of the ghia I assumed it was good.
for gigles I pulled all the plugs (3) and took a good look inside with a light
lo and behold the ring gear was trashed missing teeth big time
talked to Ricky Graffeo (site sponcer)
he said it was junk
oh well $350 for a stock rebuild cant beat it

pull the plugs for starters just to be sure you cant see anything

the side plug will show you reverse synchros and those are the first to go
if alls well there the nose cone sounds pretty easy and cheap
