Seized Transmission

first post! woo!

So, I have a '59 bug transmission in my project buggy, but it will not shift. I took the linkage apart and tapped it with a hammer. It moved around, so i worked it back and forth with the shifter, however shortly after it was stuck again. Any ideas? Would it be best to pull the tranny and have someone look at it?
I'm also in need of an engine, can you give me a reccomendation?

First thing Hi welcome to the forum next is it a split case you know with a row of bolts holding the case halfs together if it is get a new trans if not have someone look at it it could have a broken hockey stick. You can pull the front cover to check this out but you have to take the trans loose to get at it.
