Backfiring, Popping, Pooting, Intermittent Engine Miss...

Took Buggy out tonight, was running great...

On the way home, had an open stretch of road, nailed it and ran it WOT up to 5000 RPM in 2nd and 3rd, immediately starts running bad when I let off of it...Backfiring, Popping, Pooting, Intermittent Engine Miss...

Any words of advice on where to look first..??? Will pull the plugs first thing tomorrow...Had been running great since Bryan and I worked on it last weekend...

Ah, the continued joys of owning a toy...Still no oil leak, though...

Any and all advice appreciated from the experts...

It isn't the plugs....... for certain

Could be....plug wire came loose....common.
You bent a pushrod.....maybe.
You broke a valve adjuster swivel....maybe.
You broke a valve spring....maybe.
Lost a linkage nut...been there.

any noises????

Does it just do it up to say 2500? and then clear out. Could be trash in a idle jet.

Pull these brass screws out and in the end of each one is the idle jet. Pull out the idle jet and check for trash. See it under the fuel inlet. There is two in each carb. Call me after say 1:00 on Sunday...maybe I can help.
If you own IDF's get to know them well. Simple carbs but tempermental.

Could be....plug wire came loose....common. Did a quick check on all four cyls. but it was dark and things were hot...Did not notice anything loose during the cursory check...

any noises???? No Noises, other than the popping and backfiring, only when at even throttle or letting off acceletator...Runs fine under load...The miss clears out it and it runs normal...

I bet idle jet. almost 100 percent

Do this....with engine running...unscrew one idle jet holder, does it run better? repeat on each until you find the one that once unscrewed makes the engine smoooooth out. That is the clogged one. Take the jet out of the holder and completely clean it out. A grain of sand or a piece of salt sized trash will make it run like that.

MURZ knows his stuff...I cleaned them once (all the idle jets) and it didn't fix the problem...

He said I didn't do a good enough job and to get back in there, along with a few other pointers...

Purring like a Kitten now...

Was getting a little worried about not being able to occaisionally stick my foot in to it to open up the carbs...Like anything, ya gotta get the bugs worked out...In my other car hobby I like to open all fours every now and then as well...

Gonna fill up the water bottle this weekend, ya know, the one that's pointed at both rear wheels...

You don't (and won't) hear me talk bad about the ride...That car is a BLAST...

I'm crazy about "Tater Tot"...

Got to pull the jet out of the holder to clean it, otherwise you just push the junk back in the jet holder.
