I use autolite in my Beetle and will probably use the same in my buggy..

My experiences have generally been that the cheap plugs work just as well as the high dollar ones.

Bill, Do you know which ones you use? I think the NGK's fire a little hotter. That could be a good thing. I think that is what they recommend for the Kadrons.

I think you are right about the firing hotter. I started using them when I was trying to fix my plug fouling problem. The NGK's I use are B6HS.

Which Sparkplugs??

Postby the 'Maniac » 12 Mon May, 2008 9:36 pm

Which sparkplugs to use can definately get confusing, as everyone has their own opinion. :D

In the 1600 that's in our buggy now, I've always used Bosch W8AC. Even after I went to dual Kadrons & a CompuFire Distributorless Ignition system, I stayed with them & they've always worked great for me!

However, years ago while working with a Stuska dyno, running a 1776cc engine/dual Weber 40IDFs/110 cam/009 w/CompuFire module/1 3/8" 4 into 1 exhaust header w/muffler, we did a "plug test" using every brand available at that time! The "Top 5" best all-around performance sparkplugs for this engine were (1)NGKs, (2)Autolites, (3)Bosch, (4)Nippondenso, (5)Champion!!! The Top 3 were all fairly close, Nippondensos were 15% below the Bosch & the Champions were another 15% below the Nippons!

We also tried different gaps & several different heat ranges.
One of the things we did that helped the most, was to "index" the plugs! We used different thicknesses of Moroso copper washers to set them in the same position & we tried different positions!
Such a simple thing, made a fairly decent difference in performance & it didn't cost much, but it was a bit of a pain in the butt!
It sure opened our eyes!

very good information there Maniac, It has been years since I did test on plugs in one of my buggies but I do remember that I had nothing but a pain with platnum plugs. Thats what got me started "serching" instead of listening to a TV comercial I had heard.

Now that's some good tech stuff! Are you running any copper washers on your set up?
