Cylinder Head Stud Pulled from Case

Postby CoilMan » 23 Sun Sep, 2007 6:18 pm

While attempting to torque my cylinder head, one of my studs started pulling out of the case. Are these studs threaded directly into the cylinder wall? I expect they are and I have riped my threads out of the case.

Does someone have a fix for this? Surely I am not the first one to have this happen. Will I be able to use a helicoil insert to fix this?

Thanks for any advise,
Ken

Without engine disassembly the only solution is a self tapping head stud.

Case savers are the prescription, but really should be only installed in a dissassembled engine because of the shaving from drilling..........but "I" would be tempted to try this method anyway instead of the self taping head stud.

Both will be painful.....

Are the self tapping studs considered a reliable repair for this issue? If I used a self tapping stud now, would it hinder the future use of case savers? What level of disassembly is required for self tapping studs?

It is my understanding the engine only has about 10k on it, I prefer not to completely tear this engine down. But I don't want to perform substandard repairs to problems I find either.

Thanks in advance,
Ken

I don't know for a fact that it would mess up the case for future use. I would guess.

To diassemble that engine you would be looking at minimal cost and time.
Pull it off the tranny, remove the flywheel, remove the head on the passenger side. Spin the crank until you are at TDC...crank key way at 9:00, remove the oil pump, oil drain plate, remove the cylinders on passenger side, remove the pistons, pushrods and tubes, insert spring clips into lifter holes(5 bucks), and now seperate the case halves.

By doing it this way, only the passenger side is disassembled. A novice could perform this in an hour. Seriously.

Take the case half and send it to have case savers installed.
