Side Pods on a tube chassis?

Postby klangley » 06 Wed Aug, 2008 11:35 pm

I see a lot of side pods on the members' buggy's. Is it possible (I know... anything is possible), perhaps reasonable is a better term here, to put the side pods on a Manx style buggy that sits on something like the David Barrett, or Hawkeye tube chassis? Since the chassis comes up to offer extra strength and side crash protection, it looks like the pods could cover the exposed frame here and leave that nice clean look. OK, I know some want that "extra beefy" look, but I like the looks of the side pods anyway, and I think I'd really appreciate the extra strength and safety of the side tubes.

Speaking of side pods, does one need to have a pair of side pods that were made by the same mfg. of the buggy body, or do many people just buy a set of pods and adapt them to whatever Manx style body they have?

Side pods

I used a pair of side pods for my buggy from Texasbuggy's. They had to be custom "cut" to fit my body which is a clodhopper. I have a Hawkeye frame so I had to notch them around the tubes to fit. They bolt on and IMHO look real nice and finish the buggy.

Yep a little notching and will fit real nice.

Here's a pic of my first buggy, Texasbuggys body on a Hawkeye tube chassis with pods.

These are both great lookin' machines. I really like the finish the side pods give a buggy, and these are both clean examples of what I'd like to do or find already done.

What kind of floor are you putting on top of the tube chassis?

Thanks for the input.

On the aqua buggy I used 1/8 steel plate, its heavy but you can weld brackets or whatever rite to it.

The orange one I used aluminum its much lighter but you have to be more creative in how you attach things to it and it will need some reinforcement for things like seat belts.

My long body is kinda a hybrid of steel and aluminum
