Rough Start

Postby Bill K » 12 Sun Oct, 2008 12:04 pm

I am running a stock 1600 engine with a single Pic 30-31 carb, and 009 distributor.

All of a sudden it spins a good bit before it starts and then runs rough for a while. After just a bit of driving, it runs like a champ. If I kill the engine for just a little while, I get the same "lots of spin" - "rough idle" start, only to run great once I start driving it.

I've re-set the timing, installed new points, and plugs, and tried to adjust the carb.

Any ideas?

I can't remember off the top of my head but does that carb have the fuel shut off valve?? It might be stuck letting the fuel bypass flooding the engine.....That would explain the long crank time( filling the carb with fuel again), the rough idle would be plugs fuel fouled due to the flooding caused by the valve sticking... I could be wrong, Just my thoughts.

Yes, it does have a cut off valve. I have a new one on another carb, so I'll try swaping them out.
Could it also be the accelerator pump? I want to check that also tomorrow.

Your probably need to set the choke on the carburetor.
If at first you don't succeed, beat the pshaw out of the business partner, and then go at it alone! LOL!
