air vent on oil filler

The oil filler on my motor has an small vent on it that is open to the air. Is there a way to keep dirt out or do I leave open? Have a picture but don;t know how to post.

Its a vent for the motor so you want to leave it open. You can plumb it to the carb (there is usually a fitting for it), or put a small air cleaner on it like this:

That is exactly what I have. Is that one of those small air filter assembly you see a most parts houses?

If your engine is any larger than stock, I recommend putting an air box on your car with a connection to your valve covers and your vent to prevent sucking in your valve cover gaskets. Installation is easy, and instructions come with the box. Mine started leaking after 100 miles, but the box stopped all that.
