Generator Questions

It has been so long since I have seen a VW motor run, someone confirm that the motor pully on the back side turns in a clockwise direction when the motor is running. That is what I remember, but need confirmation.

Also, the old generator seens to be OK after sitting for 20 years or so without being used. I tested it by running it as a motor for a few seconds. A test I found somewhere in my research the past several months.

However, I have another generator which is newer and should be good but it does not turn/run when hooked to a battery as I did with generator # 1. This generator does not have a fan or pully attached so I did not spin it to get it going.

Any suggestions or other tests to confirm generator # 2 is good?
