Tow vehicle capacity

Postby GregR » 16 Fri Oct, 2009 12:03 pm

So I'm wondering.

If you have a buggy and trailer combo that weighs, say 2,000 lbs and you tow it with a vehicle that has a 5,000 lb towing capacity, what differences would you see if a different tow vehicle only had a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs?

That is, would it bog down more on hills, be a rougher ride, or ???

All the above. And fuel MPG will be worse also when towing.

its mostly what your suspension is rated at handling...

a truck and car can have the same horsepower, but one can pull a lot bigger loads than the other. Braking capacity goes into the equation, but mostly the suspension/stability of the vehicle

When we have to tow, we have a 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan with the 3.8L engine. It is rated for towing 3000#, but the Manxter and landscape trailer is @ 3000#, and then the loaded van. It can do it, but slows way down on the hills. It is also on the 2nd engine. Buy a real tow vehicle, and make it easy. The next vehicle will hopefully be a used Penske 16' box van. Tom
