Got this mechanical beauty at an estate sale.....$150 worth of 1960 VW bus parts including a Type 3 Engine and a lot of steel.

Took the bumper and engine cage off...everything heavy steel construction. Better look at the engine.

been sitting for about twenty years....the engine turns over and there is fairly clean oil in the crankcase...I am unfamiliar with this pancake style engine, but it is my understanding that the fan is the only real difference. The block is the same as the type 1, so once I learn the assembly, the rest should be easy. The drive train is from a 60 bus, but the pan looks like it was from a beetle. The intake is dual port, so the block may be a 1600 cc or so. Its an adventure! Stay tuned!

With the gear reduction trans that thing could plow your garden.

Really no plan Bryan...they kind of gave it away for $150 bucks, I saw the type 3 engine and 1960's pan with beam, saw the potential for using the some of the parts (cage and front push bumper). I thought of getting the engine cleaned up and swapping it for other stuff. Interesting enough, just when I thought the wife was tired of me messing with my buggy, she sees this at an estate sale and buys it for me.

Engine is out.....interesting enough, no leaking, turns over, and you can hear compression. I believe everything is 6 volt, so I am familiar with that. Something to wrench on for late evenings. It is the medicine I need to relax after work. Hey Bryan Porter,the swing axles don't just go from the trans to the backing plate, there is some style of gear reduction at the backing plates...I will try and add a pic later. Check out the home-made intake system....carb is too dirty to identify yet. 3 more pics for you guys to see.

Yes gear reduction boxes
carb is progressive 2 barrel
type three intake made to go under floor of station wagon
is starter and gen. both 6 volt?

not sure on the voltage yet....everything dirty and rusty. I am assuming that the donor car being a 1960 vw bus would dictate that the system is 6v..I do not know if it was upgraded. Interesting on the gear boxes,I guess the weight of the bus and the weak engine trying to move it down the road calls for this combination. Thanks Bryan...

Gear reduction looks identical to the 64 bus (ahem) that Sandy is hiding from you guys. It's 6 volt too!

When you think Karen is about at that point of drawing the line... remind her of the things that you wouldn't get without your buggy.

Have the intake and the generator removed. Block looks good, intake portals are clear.

Richard - how could you forget John's Bandera honey "Rodeo Rose" - the fine lady on the horse!!! I still remember the drool dripping from John's mouth as she gallop towards his broken down - 6 volt buggy on that hot steamy September day.

It does look like fellow Manx Brother John's taste in Bandara women and buggies are the same - old & rusty!!!

I was trying to get her attention, but Dave kept doing push-ups in the parking lot and she could not keep her eyes off of his man muscles. I did not have a chance for attention with a young chick-magnet like Dave around...even though there really were not any "chicks" there!

Finally have the engine ready for the stand...turns out it is a "u" block, 1600cc. Had to utilize my tap and die kit to build a fan puller. Pressure washed the block and it seems like it is in great shape. Once I get my neighbor to help me lift it to the stand, I will pull the heads and investigate further.

Hey Richard.....I was thinking of slapping that engine in my buggy and bumping the horse power up. Got that advice from a good source (Bryan Porter) and I thought if I paint it up right, it might even look good. With the carb on top like that and that front shroud, it almost has the looks of a Ford V8. Just wrenching around on it and learning a little....I am wanting to go drive my buggy around but the weather has changed back to winter time here in Houston and this engine gives me something buggy-like to do and to post. The wife and I did get a good 3 hour cruise in last weekend, and drove around looking at houses in old League City and near by neighborhoods. It was perfect weather. Richard, did you ever get your pushrod tubes to stop leaking?

Nope - leaks like a sieve.. The cold weather slowed it down a bit but she needs some serious attention. Sides the pushrods, I think other things are leaking as well. An old friend once told me "drive it till it breaks, then fix it". As lazy as I've gotten these days, THAT MIGHT JUST HAPPPEN!

Probably getting the leak from the oil cooler that stands over the driver's side cylinders, under the fan shroud. I had that experience thinking that it was the tubes.

Block looks good...going to freshen up the cylinders, get some push-rod tubes, re-assemble, and see if she will fire.

Almost.......rebuilding the intake with fresh connectors and a clean carb. I want to build an add-on for my engine stand that would allow me to start the engine while on the stand. I have seen the engine stands people make with the partial bell housing, but without the trans to sacrifice, have any of you skilled builders found a way to simulate the mount for the starter?

Engine stand is way to unstable to start engine just shove it in the buggy.

Be a man... just hold the starter up to the case and fire away.

Please set up the video recorder beforehand... um... at a safe distance, so we can see what an awesome engine you have.

And ....you get to see it tear my arm off, and maybe see the engine hit the floor and stuff go everywhere! I'm not scared though! But, I have seen some stands on YouTube videos that seem to handle the engines just fine. Thanks for being in my corner Ken! By the way, this stuff is 12V so I will not need "the helpful link" you sent me.

Getting closer to the video Ken! You were right Bryan Porter.......the starter is 6V and the generator/voltage regulator are both 12V. I guess the builder married the 1960 pan-trans-axle to a more modern engine.

Thank goodness for the front pulley......figured out how to start it on the stand. Making use of an old table saw-gear reduction motor and a lever.

Good job on the rigging John! There's no way I could have come up with anything like that to make it work.

Thanks Richard.....Hey Ken, here is the start up video on the Type 3.....started first rotation,its a weird version though with the distributor 180 degrees reversed and the Holley-Motorcraft Ford two barrel carb. Getting the carb rebuild kit was the hardest part.

Dang John that's really cool stuff. And I'm actually happy it wasn't more "eventful"... although I'm sure you understand that the opportunity of a more entertaining video sounded very possible. Hmmm... there wasn't any out -takes were there? You going to put that in your buggy or what :?:

I got the rail out a couple times this weekend, man Saturday was just a perfect buggy day. She ran real good. Give her a bath and she's ready for buggy season :!:

Can't wait to see you bums at the Classic.

Going to keep it as a spare....runs great, just weird in the settings. The stand was plenty strong to support the start up.
