shifter adjustment

Postby Rick » 29 Wed Apr, 2009 10:42 am

is there some procedure for adjusting the shifter? I hooked everything up and thought I got very lucky when I cut the shift rod and shortened it. I have nuetral, first, third and reverse. I can't get it too stay in second or fourth. I rolled it back into the shop and while it's just sitting there you can shift it and feel it go into all the gears but when I back it out and start it up it won't stay in second or fourth. There has to be more to it than blindly cutting the shift rod and shortning it and putting it back together and everything working. That would be to simple.

Are you saying that it pops out of gear when you drive? That usually indicates a problem with the transmission itself. Popping out of gear is a common problem not eaisly fixed. As far as the shift rod shortening, it is customary to use one of these.:

sounds like the rod is to short try sliding the shifter as for forward as you can get it and try it then.

I already tried moving the shifter and no difference. I talked to a guy today and he thinks I have the wrong pressure plate. When it's running it just grinds when you shift unless your an old old old truck driver then it goes into gear but jumps out.

Just to throw out my experience...I had a similar problem. I ended up removing the shifter, then the cover where the shift rod coupler was and shifted manually from there(rod coupler) to see if it would stay in all of the gears. My did with out the shifter so I knew it was something in the length of the rod or the shifter I was using. My fix, I ended up changing to a different shifter that could throw a bit longer. Bought it second hand so I have no idea the make/manuf.

I agree with Don, if you try the method above and it pops out of gear, transmission/bearing/clutch issue, if it stays in gear, it is a rod issue.
