Trans leak

Postby balbright » 12 Tue May, 2009 5:47 am

Can't get my trans to quit leaking. I'm not sure what trans I have, but it's irs and the nose cone has no lip seal, just a bushing.
I've had it out twice. It seems to pressurize the case when I have to maintane higher speeds [ 60-65 ] for a longer distance. I try to avoid freeways because of this and my motor is just a 1641.
I've checked the vent hole on top both time to make sure it's clear. It always pukes toward the front around the nose cone-to-case gasket or out the shift rod which naturally goes in the tunnel.
The first time it blew was a trip from Fayetteville, Ar, back to Joplin, Mo which as all freeway. It slung grease all over the "firewall", trans and back of the motor. Of course, I know, wind had alot to do with the spread.
I think I have a freeway flyer tranny. I don't have alot of trouble maintaning 60 to 65. I can do the 70 mph but don't like it.
Thanks, all.

O.K. I guess nobody has any advise, like, change nose cones, this style will work, use this type gasket, it's better.
I'll figure something out. Thanks anyways.

Can you pin point exactly where the leak is coming from? May be leaking from the bushing even if it is ew if the housing has some wear. Check there first and if leaking between the nose cone and the trany the paper gasket maybe torn or kinked when installing it.

It appears to be come from the front, around the bushing. I've replaced the nose cone gasket twice and I've checked the vent hole to make sure it's clear. It's seems to pressurize the case when I do higher speeds for any length of time.
Can I replace the nose cone with one that has the rubber lip seal? Has anyone ever drilled out the vent hole and tap it to put a breather vent tube. I really can't imagine that it would be neccessary, but who knows.
MIKE. I'm know these guys are really great. That's why I don't usually even bother Samba or DBA. Patience is something I was never born with, especially when I get really frustrated, like I am now with this tranny. I deeply apologize and I really really mean that.
See you guys later. Appreciate the replies. I need the info.

Hi Bob,
Been a while since I have looked at the site.

Just a thought, when you put the gear oil in, was the buggy on level ground and did you fill it just to the bottom of the fill hole? I over filled one years agop and it blew the oil out when the trans got warmed up - it may just be to much oil?

Neal :)

Hey, Neal. Good to hear from you. How you doing? The buggy was in my garage on level ground and I filled it with 75/90 Eaton synthetic, just til I saw a tricle coming out of the fill hole.
You may be right. It's expanding when it gets warmed up good. That was one reason I put in the synthetic. Gear train components tend to run cooler on synthetic. This is the same gear oil we pump in the 18-wheelers at work and Eaton Corp will warranty the trans and axles to 750,000 miles if you use their gear oil and change it out every 250,000 miles. I figured, it couldn't hurt i the tranaxle, huh?
Thanks, all!!!!

I'll bet it is too full. The first time I pulled it, I used an axle grade silicone sealant on the nose cone. The Peterbilt's don't have gasket to mount the "pumpkin" in the axle housing, just this silicone. We'll, that didn't cut it. I thought that it blew the silcone out, so I pulled the tranny again, checked the nose cone and trans with a staright edge and used a gasket. So, I got thinking, these guy just may be right. I just bet it's expanding when hot and puking out the front bushing.
I'm going to pull the tranny again, soon, to replace the mount with the eurethane ones or go solid. The single 30pict carb is going to get replace with some kind of duals. Kadrons or Webers.
See ya.
