I'm bummed out

Postby tjheller » 12 Mon Feb, 2007 11:03 pm

Got my wheels, got the right stance, got new brakes and cables put on, this afternoon was the time to attempt to start it. (last registered in '90) Hook up some jumper cables to my truck and turn the key...raaaraawww, raaaaraaaaaw, rrraaaarrraaawwww. You guys know the sound. Something is bad wrong, sounded like grinding. Pulled the plugs and relieved a little pressure, but still spinning over slowly and it's not due to small battery...it was hooked up to my Powerstroke. Any ideas on typical problems?

It was with the "box-o-parts" I got with the car, so I assume it was.

You might check how much amps you are drawing, could be a bad starter.

With the plugs out, try to turn the motor by hand and wrench. If it turns but is real stiff, put a little WD40 into each cylinder, (spray) and let it set for a few minutes. Then try to spin it again with the wrench. If it is better, reinstall the plugs and pour a SMALL amount of gasoline down the carb and try again. When it sputters, you can add more small amounts untill the carburetor can take over and feed the engine.

I may have discovered the problem. The bushing that holds the starter nose is awol and I'm sure the bendix is deflecting, hence the grinding. Thanks for the suggestions.

thats it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I went thru a couple bateries before i figured it out on my rail.
once you get the new bushing in it will spin fine. trust me
I would also put in a little lube like daveO said
if you got a oil pressure gauge put that on as well beofre
attemting to fire it up
spin it over till the pressure is good then try the starting procedure

Stick an autostick starter in it and be done with the bushing issue.....forever.

Knock the old bushing out and run the auto, works great, a little more expensive but no more starter bushing blues.

Actually you can leave the old bushing in there....it won't hurt anything.
