it was the standard scam where they try to sell a car they dont own. All sorts of twist. His was that the car was being sold so cheap because he needed it gone. OF course, the car was in one state(not the state it was offered in). He was either moving or had moved or was in the military. For me, he was in Ottawa, others he was in Iraq. He would try to conviece you to send the money through paypal(a bogus one at that).I keep stringing him along and kept refusing to go the payment route he wanted and told him that until the car was in my town where my banker could see it, they would not release the funds. I played his own game against him. Also, I went hunting the thief and posted on every site I found the car on.

Most of the time these guys are playing for the $500 deposit, and then you'll never see or find them or the car.

A while back there was another one of these for a different dune buggy on Craigs' List in the Houston area.

SCAM

Postby Patrick » 16 Mon Mar, 2009 8:34 pm

Well I ran into a scam like that when I was looking for a 5 window classic truck. The truck was in San Antonio and he was overseas. He told me there were others interested and if I wanted to make sure I had a chance to go look at it over the weekend I'd have to wire him $2000.00. I was actually talking to this guy on the phone. I told him well I'm not in a hurry and I'd like to see it in person. I already knew it was a scam when he told me he was overseas and he wanted a deposit. I just well kind of hung up on him after awhile and turned him into the webmaster who deleted his ad.

I've also seen people steal other people's ads on Ebay and relist it for a very low price trying to get away with that scam.

I just had to sell our VW Bus and well I got over 1000 Scam emails about buying it right away. Just have to be careful these days.

Here's the concept since I'm on the net so much. Always do checks.
Goto google.com get the persons email address enter it in there. Usually pulls up every place where that person has posted.

You can then find out if that person has been in any clubs. Then you can find out and or ping people that know that person to find out if they are real. If they are an avid Vduber you can most lilkey see that they have posted on the Samba some place or other forum. Most likely about the car they are selling. Then start reading all about the car. That's how I found out about our VW Bus we had. I had to read through about 100 pages of forum chitter chatter, but I found out what had been replaced and what was broken and what I needed to fix before buying it. Happy interneting.
