Foiled

Postby CoryN » 06 Sat Feb, 2010 11:39 am

While I have at least 2 inches of room on the drivers side, the passenger side I have about a 1/4 of an inch. I thought I could cut away some of the fiberglass and get more room, but the gas tank is right there.

So I can't narrow using traditional methods.

Is anyone NOT running shocks up front?

I running an adjustable beam that is down all the way. The ride was just a bit harsh, so I'm running 15# of air in the front tires and no shocks. That softened the ride considerably and with no adverse affect on the steering.

Thanks - I'm experimenting today, I think I can cut a pie shape wedge out of my towers and lay them back and weld back up. That will get me the clearance I need and still allow me to run shocks. I tested all the tie rods, and think it will still work. If it doesn't then I'll just cut the towers off and run shockless.

Got it all welded back up. Narrowed three inches and put in adjusters. Laid the shock towers back to clear the gas tank. Should be good to go. Now to shorten the tie rods

Good deal Cory. Post up some pics of the modification in case we have to do the same thing. I have an old time beam, I think its from a 1951 VW and the shock towers were shorter then they are now. I have not decided if I am going to use it or not. Its worth more as parts for someone else.
