Motor Rebuild - Someone local

Postby rsw4723 » 07 Sun Mar, 2010 10:47 pm

I'm pulling the motor out of my buggy for a trans cone replacement and thinking it's a great time to have the motor refreshed/rebuilt for the spring time.

It's a 1600 sp and seeking someone local or in the houston area. I'm in richmond texas

Any names or places to take the motor?

Thanks-again!!!!!

If it is just a freshening you can do that your self. Just do the top end. Bring it up to 1641 with pistons and cylinders and upgrade to dual port heads while you are at it.

X2 on do it yourself. If you have the tools/skills to pull the motor and transmission then you have everything you need. There is a good book on the subject (http://www.amazon.com/Rebuild-Volkswagen-air-Cooled-Engine-models/dp/0895862255/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1268058013&sr=8-1) and a Bug-me video.

Just another option. I picked up a professionally rebuilt long block for not much more then I could have learned how to build it myself and build the top yourself. Building the top is nothing more complicated then bolting on clean pretty parts. Plus I got a 1 year warranty. PM me if you would like to know where I got mine and what I paid.

I can't recommend anyone in Houston for work done, but i found these places on the internet. I would call around and just talk with them. You can tell if they are interested and get a sense that they have a clue. If they don't do classic work, then they will give you another lead.

Kevorks is no longer in business. Another option is Smith Foriegn auto repair. I think they are pasadena or something. I still say if it was running good prior to pulling it that you can do what's needed yourself. Get one of the previously mentioned books and have Bill come over and anyone else that is available and get it done.
Sounds like a work day for the buggy folks.
You could also post up on the Aircoolers board. There are plenty of VW folks in your area always wanting to lend a hand.

Thanks Guys! I was hoping for a core exchange to a 1600 DP or maybe something higher if the money is right. I really don't have all the proper tools so I'll keep checking around. I do know that Kermit at KAR Parts has moved so maybe I'll give him a call.

Hey Bill K! Sure we could do some buggy "jawboning" IF you leave your buggy at my house

Were in the process now to get the buggy ready for the road.

It can stay only as long as we are jawboning. It just doesn't do well sleeping anywhere but home.
