Done Gone and Lost My Mind After Salado!

Postby mwh986 » 07 Mon Jun, 2010 11:31 pm

I had such a great time with my daughter's green Buggy in Salado with y'all, I had the best time meeting all of you and talking shop about your mods, advice, and stories. This group is really something special as the members are really nice guys/gals. We regret not being able to stay for the ride.

I just found a bought my first mostly ground up buggy project and brought it back from SE Houston (in the country).

It has had some work thus far:
*Already cut pan
*Replaced floor pans and tubing around exterior
*New front end
*New trailing arms

Will need:
complete brake reworking
Clutch/Brake cluster remounted
Wire harness with all electrical components
paint
wider rubber
Windshield

It is titled as a 67 with a 1600 single port engine (needs rebuilt or replaced)

Swing axle
5 lug wheels

The silver flake tub has been cut a bit, but is secured to the pan with a minimum of fasteners.

Any "tips of the trade" before I embarq on this adventure? Just looking for guidance on avoiding the pitfalls of a rebuild.

Welcome aboard Mark.

Sounds like a good start. You going to work to have it running for the Boerne Round Up on Labor Day weekend?

How about starting us off with some pictures of your new ride.

Post up some pictures!

Is this a newer body? Sorta reminds me of one I sold a while back...

If anyone has knowledge of this buggy, please share with me as I embarq on the rebuild, any info would be appreciated.

The "Flair" is what drew me to this body, I prefer the accentuated fenders and lower foot entry to the buggy.

It needs a bunch of work, but the pan looks like a great platform to begin on. Someone spent some time on it.

Looks like a PO went sawsall crazy and cut the dash from the hood.....................needs to be re-glassed in (that is it in the fore ground in pic #1)

Ding, Ding, Ding! We have a winner!

Y'all are awesome!!

I need to look up Vee Dub Nut here in San Antonio and thank him (and his wife) for all their hard work.

What a well documented history, much better than I expected.

Bummer it did not come with the engine in the pics............Looks like I have to rebuild the existing 1500. Any idea on what the "H5" "low compression" engine is?

Now, I need to get to work on this thing!

WOW.... I kinda thought so the way you were describing it. Thats why I asked you to post up pictures.

It does look quite a bit more beat than when I sold it. Someone has jacked with the body even more than it was when I had it. I'm disappointed that the bedliner I rolled in didn't seem to hold up :|

That being said.. yes the chassis is VERY strong. I was super pleased how that came out. I did split the engine up separately when I sold it. Easier to unload that way. If I can answer any questions, by all means let me know. I'm in the middle of rebuilding my turbo fuel injected engine for my '67 right now. Eventually the wife and I will be building anther buggy, but next one will be a long wheelbase so the family can enjoy. Speaking of which, our little family is going to be +1 in less than 3 weeks

Hit me up sometime.. More than happy to share what I know about it.

Adam, Congrats on the addition to your family.

I'm currently going through bags of old part and trying to figure out what belongs and what may be "surplus".

I think I have all the parts for the brakes. The front look to be redone, the rear are the challange.

I have been wire brushing all parts and painting. Have the remainder parts in tranist with hopes of having the brakes functioning by next week.

Then off to rebuild the engine.

The front brakes are new.. The donor car that I used had just had the front completely replaced prior to it getting parted out. So you should be good there. The back is actually a little different. You actually have a Type 3 trans (long axle, long splines). That is why there is an extra spacer between the drum and the axle nut. The factory type 3 drums have a longer snout. I used the earlier brake parts, and the extra axle spacer is just the right thickness to make up for the shorter snout on the type 1 drums (got this info off of the Samba). So its the earlier style type 1 brakes on the type 3 axles.

VW axles are like this:

Pre 66 type 1, short axle short spline
67 type 1, long axle short spline
68 type 1 and all type 3, long axle long spline

Interesting, my pan came with type 3 transaxle, but I used a different one. I need to look at it and see if it was set up that way too.

OK! And here I thought some idiot (the owner after you of course) had re-assembled the rearend out of sequence.

I have not yet pulled apart the bearing case to see whats there. I'm currently pulling a new steel brake line throught the tunnel, it just arrived yesterday and will be my Saturday project. Then on to the axles. Just had a box arrive today of e brake cables, brake hoses, clutch and accellerator cable. Still waiting on the bearings.

Can't wait to dive in!

Hey, the Type 3 was VW's entry into the luxury/performance market, correct? Any noticible difference in the Type 3 tranny?

LOL.. no idiot, at least I don't think so LOL

Yea, just turns out that the inner spacer is the perfect size, so all I had to was get another couple of those and it allowed to easily bolt up the drums. I do have the type three backing plates still. They are popular for folks wanting more braking as the drum is wider. Downside is that you have to turn down the snout to get them to fit on short spline cars, but you could just bolt them up. I never bothered, in fact, I still have stock drums on the rear of my turbocharged bug (disk on the front) and it stops fantastic, so no reason to change. Regardless, I have the backing plates if you have any interest in them.

Nothing special about the type three trans.. exactly the same as all the rest. Just different axles.

Thanks for the offer on the backing plates, however I'll stick to what I currently have (if someone else is interested, let Adam know).

Did not get to the brakes this past weekend, gona try tonight.

I was at Buggy Wharehouse today at lunch and there was a red Beetle with as roof rack like yours in the lot. I was hoping we might cross paths, however it was Adian's, once I asked.
