VIN Question?

Postby Faron » 31 Tue Jan, 2012 1:46 am

I am looking at the VIN on my chassis and found it a little strange. 3456XXX Is the VIN Less the last 2 numbers. When I look on the VIN decoder www.thesamba.com. I do not see that the chassis is a Bug, but a Type 34. Is this strange to anyone besides me?
Again I have used the "search Button", and I have googled and tried to use all sorts of VIN Decoders. Can anyone help please. If only to point me in the right direction. I have thought about going into a MVD Express to see if they can help, but.....

The number on the title is a re stamped number that is next to the VIN so I am really confused. I didn't have any problems when I got the title put into my name, so I am only a little worried...

I believe a type 34 is a Ghia, aside from the shape of the pans, I think a Ghia pan is the same as a bug pan.

Or, they had a title and some numbers and made it work.

You are correct in thinking that the PO did "make it work". It does have the typical chassis number, and a hand stamped number that is on the New Mexico State Title that is in my name. It just feels a little funky! I am worried that if I move back to Texas in the future, I will have a problem getting a Texas State Title. In the future I may have to buy a Piece of Junk Bug with a clean title, and get to work. Opinions?

I don't think it will be an issue. No one looked at my VIN number on my pan at any point in the process.

By hand stamped, do you mean that New Mexico stamped a new VIN on your chassis? If so, that is now your vin as it matches the one that's on your paperwork.
The original VW VIN will be good only identifying the year of the chassis when you buy parts...which is pretty much moot, since most everything has been replaced or changed.

I can only assume that the "hand-stamp" was done by an employee of New Mexico State!
