Speedometer cable

Postby CoryN » 10 Thu Sep, 2009 8:59 pm

For those of you with mechanical speedos is a beetle cable long enough? I've heard to use a bus cable?

speedometer cable

Postby Rick Leddon » 10 Thu Sep, 2009 9:28 pm

Hi Cory

I replaced a cable and the standard was too short. I ended up using a bus cable. I'm glad you posted this question. I have a buggy I getting ready to install a speedometer in and forgot and the bus cable.

Any downside to having a cable that's on the long side? Otherwise I'll play it safe and just go with the bus cable

Cable!

Postby Hawk » 11 Fri Sep, 2009 6:29 am

We use the cable from a super beetle. Or in the rails we build we will get the bus cable and shorten to what we need. Hope it helps!

Neil, How do go about shortening the cable? Are special tools needed?

speedo cable shortening

Postby Hawk » 11 Fri Sep, 2009 3:34 pm

I cut the the square drive off then get the old cable out of the square. pull the cable out of the housing, cut to length, I use a tool that is used for crimping cable rope to crimp the square back on.

I guess your asking about the cable :? it runs from the left front drum/disk dust cover through the center of the spindle then to the speedo.

The disc brake rotor/hub should have the same speedo cable access as the stock drum. It feeds through the spindle from the back and attaches to the grease cap with a circlip.

Well not sure about empi disc but Ive used the AC disc kit from So cal imports and it uses the same dust cover as the drums.
Does your spindle have the hole in the center? If it does then you should be good to go.

If there is no hole in the spindle Id call the place that sold you the kit, that just doesn't sound rite, but hey what do you expect it's EMPI!

Is this a ball joint or link pin?

Only other thing I know to do is buy a GPS that will display your speed.

Look for a speedo that uses a "Hall Effect Transducer" That is a sensor that attaches close to a wheel and sends a signal up to your electronic speedo, (digital or analog I think)
Auto Meter, VDO and others make them.

I think what you will need is a VW front wheel bearing dust cover. The dust cover has a small squarish hole in the middle of it. The end of the cable goes through the hole and there should be a groove in the end of the cable to receive a clip that keeps the cable in place. The rotation of your hub dust cover then turns your speedo cable.

Ok, looks simple. Let me get it straight! One end of cable attaches to the speedometer, the other end of cable attaches to the other side that goes through the little hole in the spindle? just put the cable through the spindle and attach the clip and the dust cap?? Nothin else goes on the spindle. And the dust cap turns the cable and makes it work... Great!

I use a cable from a '73 T1. Others use one from a bus and shorten it if necessary. There's a discussion about speedo cable lengths earlier in this string.
