Judging is always hit and miss. I have to admit when I took my car to the BB last year I expected to at least place. Nope. No big deal it was my first car show and quickly learned that unless your car appeals to most you don't have a chance. Every car is different and appeals to different people.
The rule of thumb at car shows seems to be if Joe Q public who doesn't know pshaw about a car, building it, or even changing oil likes your car you are in the running. Simple understated cars don't do well. Chrome, accessories, and for lack of a better term "pep boys" styling seem to be popular. For me, I guess I will never go there or build something like that. My cars have always been about minute details that have to studied to satisfy. That makes "me" happy. The public, obviuosly not. Mind you that is not to slam anyone's car. Read on......
Case in point, the car I traded the buggy for, a 62 convertible "looks" great, and recently won best of show in a field of 70-80 cars. I accepted the throphy with a lump in my throat because I felt there were many cars much more deserving in the attention to detail category. My car although nice has a loose front end, rusted pans, and a borrowed engine. Show winner? Not in my book and that is why little by little it will be brought to the next level by me. I am too picky. It will be perfect in the years to come. Will it look much different ...no not unless you study it. I will know.
But......the car does turn heads and is "showy" with nice rims, slammed stance, and good paint. It appeals to the masses.
Want a show winner? Go all out and have your neighbor, priest, or even kids judge the progress. If they don't like it and you are chasing throphies you'd better change it. They know better in the trophy department.
Point is trophies and winning is strictly a matter of opinion. Would a texas car have a chance at a Hawaii show ....not a chance. The tube chassis jacked up look is not in favor there. We like em. They don't.
Bottom line is if you didn't win would you have done anything different in the build? I would not have and probably will build my car all over again in a couple of years. Will it win shows? Probably not....but it will be my dream come to life and in the grand scheme of things that is all that really matters.
I have met so many friends in this hobby, lets not forget why we love our cars. Trophies? Doubt it. I dig the forever friends aspect.
Trophy winner or not I would roll anybody's car in this club. Be proud of your dreams and the fact that you built it-----from scratch. How many other car enthuiasist can say that?
Ok now.....group hug.
My name is Michael Murzi and I have been build free for 396 days now.
