I'm hoping to for Sunday. It depends on how Susan's doing with her recuperation. If I make it, it'll be without the buggy and I might be one of the judges for the buggy classes

Hey Steve

Postby Texasbuggys » 17 Tue Apr, 2007 11:31 pm

Hey Steve O, since you will be staying in Houston, you have weekend plans? I just happen to have some Grand Prix ticckets and pit passes for two, sweet ones. PM me if your intrested. I was going to list on the bay but decided to put them to better use, pass them to a friend who would enjoy them. I can overnight fed-to you if you can make it if not, I have second in line. You have helped me in the past with parts locating and some pics that helped and may hit ya up for more, LOL as they gave me a good idea of what I need to build. Anyways, PM if your intrested, I think it is a two or three day package, worth your time to go for sure unless your working.

Postby Texasbuggys » 23 Mon Apr, 2007 1:22 pm

Hey it was really great seeing everyone! I really think the show is well setup and draws a large crowd. Thanks to Jimmy and Donna for providing me some Buggy Blast Flyers, I handed out alot of them at the show and lots of intrest. Again, it was a great show and good swap meet. Heck Chris almost became a Bug owner! And Steve Owes green buggy was a real treat.

No, I didn't place, and that's certainly not the first time, nor will it be the last. But as far as this year's Classic goes, I guess I have to vent a bit. I was not at all happy with the judging in my class. More precisely with second and third place awards in our class. Please don't missunderstand, it's not winning that has me mad, just trying to figure out what criteria the judges used to select second and third place. In my opinon Jimmy has a much better car than I, and when he didn't even place against the competition we had, then something is wrong with the judging.
And here again, please don't misunderstand, I don't hold anything against those who took those places. If I were them I'd grab the trophy, and smile from ear to ear. I'm very happy for them.

As far as everything else about being at the show, I'm like everyone else that attended. I thorougly enjoyed meeting old friends, and making some great new ones. Cruisin' town, and touring the Willow Springs Loop was a blast. How could that not be, with David and Edie leading the way.
But I have to say in all honesty that I am disenchanted with the show as far as judging goes. I hate to be negative, but that's just the way I feel.

I will have to say that I am very upset with my fellow Texas Manx Club Members. I am very proud of the buggy that I built and also the buggys that you all built. I think that I built a nice buggy. I am not going to say it is better than than any other. I did not select my buggy over anyone else's buggy but I also don't need to be slamed for winning third place. I have always had fun going to these shows and being with friends but i guess I should take another look at who I call friends. I am sorry you feel that way and I will send anyone my trophy that wants it if that will make you feel better. Thats a small price to pay for friendships.

Russ,
In my post I spoke specifically about "my class", which was pan chassis. You won in the tube chassis, as well you should have. Please, please re read my post. It had absolutely nothing to do with you.
I'm proud for your win, you deserved to win, and I'm very happy for you.

I am sorry for the venting, I did look at it wrong. I didn't think any of my buggy friends would take a shot at me or any other club member. We have to stick together. I agree the judging was a little off in some classes.

Judging is always hit and miss. I have to admit when I took my car to the BB last year I expected to at least place. Nope. No big deal it was my first car show and quickly learned that unless your car appeals to most you don't have a chance. Every car is different and appeals to different people.

The rule of thumb at car shows seems to be if Joe Q public who doesn't know pshaw about a car, building it, or even changing oil likes your car you are in the running. Simple understated cars don't do well. Chrome, accessories, and for lack of a better term "pep boys" styling seem to be popular. For me, I guess I will never go there or build something like that. My cars have always been about minute details that have to studied to satisfy. That makes "me" happy. The public, obviuosly not. Mind you that is not to slam anyone's car. Read on......

Case in point, the car I traded the buggy for, a 62 convertible "looks" great, and recently won best of show in a field of 70-80 cars. I accepted the throphy with a lump in my throat because I felt there were many cars much more deserving in the attention to detail category. My car although nice has a loose front end, rusted pans, and a borrowed engine. Show winner? Not in my book and that is why little by little it will be brought to the next level by me. I am too picky. It will be perfect in the years to come. Will it look much different ...no not unless you study it. I will know.

But......the car does turn heads and is "showy" with nice rims, slammed stance, and good paint. It appeals to the masses.

Image

Want a show winner? Go all out and have your neighbor, priest, or even kids judge the progress. If they don't like it and you are chasing throphies you'd better change it. They know better in the trophy department.

Point is trophies and winning is strictly a matter of opinion. Would a texas car have a chance at a Hawaii show ....not a chance. The tube chassis jacked up look is not in favor there. We like em. They don't.

Bottom line is if you didn't win would you have done anything different in the build? I would not have and probably will build my car all over again in a couple of years. Will it win shows? Probably not....but it will be my dream come to life and in the grand scheme of things that is all that really matters.

I have met so many friends in this hobby, lets not forget why we love our cars. Trophies? Doubt it. I dig the forever friends aspect.

Trophy winner or not I would roll anybody's car in this club. Be proud of your dreams and the fact that you built it-----from scratch. How many other car enthuiasist can say that?

Ok now.....group hug.

My name is Michael Murzi and I have been build free for 396 days now.

Personally, I don't care if I every win another trophy. I agree, It makes all the hard work you do on your buggy worth it. But for me, the best part about a weekend like this past one, is to enjoy hanging with friends who share your same interest. I look forward to the cruises. That's is one of the main reason I go to Fredericksburg. Edie and I both love to get out and drive. It is real hard to take something that is driven pretty regularly and expect to win a trophy with it. Don't get me wrong, I keep the buggy polished up. But it only takes one dent or scratch or oil spot to get you out of the trophy running. I built my buggy to drive. I would have just as good of a time if we all just got together and looked over and admired the previous years progress on each others projects (no trophys or awards) Just some good fellowship and conversation. To me, that is what it's all about. (oh yea! and the cruising)
My .02 worth.

wow I leave for a couple days you guys and galls get all chaty
I new something was wrong when no one posted when yall got back

some points I noted over the last few years

1) once your car has lost its wow factor your dun
(basicly if someone has seen it before)
2) newcomers to the show get trophys no matter what
(except Bill K LOL)
3) if your not voulenteering at the show you cant Bitch period
(but we still do)

believe me I understand not placing sux
I have been to several VW shows were I dident even see the top 25
oh well I try not to let it bother me too much I know mine is what I like

maybe we can give a trophy at the blast for the most VW shows with out a trophy class! LOL

now that everyone has spoken
we can get on to making the Blast better than any show this year.
to do that we need volunteers.
so whos in

congradulation to Russell for his buggy win!

another winner in our club this last weekend goes to Kerry Evans with his F1 Hawk . He placed second even without a buggy class! way to go Kerry.

The ole F1 still got it going on.

Wow, I am really surprised at some of these comments. I did not get to make it this year, really wanted to though but to much going on with the kids. Have been in a couple of shows, never placed but did not really matter as my car was built to drive and if you drive it, it is not going to look like new for long from the rocks, etc.

Steve you are right on on what you have noticed over the years, except for number 2, not true at all for most.

Any way hope to make the Buggy Blast in May.

My initial post about judging at the Classic was not intended at all to sound like a trophy hunt. That's not my bag, (although I'd be less than honest if I said I don't enjoy winning an award). It's like most everyone else has said, it's the social side that's the real meat and potatoes of entering a show. My comments were simply the product of a struggle between reason and frustration, and unfortunately frustration won out.

I completely agree with David's earlier comments about getting together. In fact he, I, and Tom Colello and the wives were discussing the idea of a "no award" show. An event where we got together to show our cars to each other, see progress made, do some learning, exchange ideas, and do some cruisin'. Something very realaxing and laid back.
I think currently someone does something like that called a "no show show", or some name like that.
I think the idea has some real possibilities.
Thoughts or ideas?

Chris I would love to, my wife has been bugibg me to death to go riding. Talk with Ricky the other day, he is driving his car almost every day to save gas. Wish that was an option for me, but too far to go one way.

By the way you got to change your name on here now, no more aquabuggy, just kidding.
